Mav -> Restoring Mailboxes and Public folders (22.Feb.2006 2:15:18 PM)

I have just been the victim of a hard drive failure and I have been having some difficulty getting my Active Directory to restore.  Nothing I do seems to get the job done.  I have a very simple setup, one DC with multiple clients.  The machine that I am trying to restore to is an identical machine to the one that suffered the HD crash so I am sure that the hardware is not the issue.  I have never had to perform this task yet so I am pretty unfamiliar with the steps to take and the information I am getting from the 'Net is not helping one bit.  Anyway, since I am unable to get my AD to restore I thought that I would just manually enter in all my user accounts (only about 25 of them) but I am not sure how to restore their mailboxes after I accomplish this.  Restoring AD would make my life a whole lot easier but for whatever reason I am not able to.  Once I have created all of my user accounts, can I restore the mailboxes and connect them to each user?  Also, by chance, if anyone can help me avoid this step all together and restore my AD that would be fantastic!!  I know this is not an AD forums but there are alot of knowledgable people here.  Thanks for any and all help that you can provide.  At this point I will take any piece of advice as my network has been down for a whole day and I need to get it back up and running ASAP.  Thanks again.

I you have backupped the system state of your AD you should be able to restore it. It depends on what you useally backup.

Hi,

If you have taken the backup of your system state data, then you may resotre that, apart from that if u have got the PST of your mailboxes, you can restore them by Exmerge in concern mailboxes after creating users in new AD.

Hello,

It was a painful process that I wouldn't want to inflict on anyone but I have restored the network and AD.  Apparently there is a fault with Veritas Backup Exec for Windows and Win2000, at least that is what I get from Dell and sort of from Veritas.  Great to find this out now!  Anyway, I was able to restore all the mailboxes and user accounts (at least part of them) by restoring each mailbox and then selecting to restore the user account for it as well.  I still had a lot of work to do to get the network and domain working again but it is running once again.

Just a heads up to anyone else using Veritas Backup software...check into this fault as I would hate for anyone else to run into this problem during a crisis.  It did not make my life fun for about 3 days while trying to perform the restore.  Thanks for the tips.

Can you please describe the fault?

I didn't get a whole lot of detail other than there is a conflict between the software and Windows that causes the restore process to hang when the system reboots itself after the restore.  It hangs at the Windows 2000 splash screen.  I did read in some articles that ppl have seen it hang for 30 minutes but mine hung for over 8 hours during my 3rd attempt.  Veritas had directed me to their updates/downloads section of their website to get the latest updates/patches but by that time I was already "restored" the hard way so I never had a chance to try it.  I did look there and didn't see anything specifically saying that it fixed or helped with my problem though.  Sorry I don't have more info.  I haven't had much chance to dig into it more as I have been busy putting out the 100's of little fires that seem to keep cropping up because of this whole mess.  If, and when, I find out anything more I will try to remember to post it here for all to benefit from.  In the mean time, if you are using Veritas Backup Exec I would suggest doing a test restore of the system state as soon as you can to make sure it works.
