atowne -> OWA - Page Cannot Be displayed @ Logon (11.Apr.2006 3:17:38 PM)

We have a FE/BE topology and both the FE and BE have Exchange 2003 SP2 and Window 2003 SP1.  We are trying to run OWA on our internal network with integrated authentication.  (No access will be granted for external clients).  We have not enabled forms based authentication.  We also disabled the basic authentication on the FE and BE.  We have enabled anonymous authentication on the FE and verified the BE has integrated authentication.  These changes and verifications were on the Exchange Virtual directories and the Public Virtual directories.

However, when connecting through our DNS host entry (which points to the FE) we get the error Page cannot be displayed.  If we try to connect to the http://fe/exchange/alias we get the page cannot be displayed.  When connecting to the FE, it does not matter if we do IP or FQDN.

If we connect to the  http://be/exchange/alias the OWA launches successfully.

You will still need some kind of authentication on the FE.  You can't have Anonymous enabled.

That's a bummer.

Why doesn't pass through work?

leederbyshire -> RE: OWA - Page Cannot Be displayed @ Logon (11.Apr.2006 3:41:53 PM)

Actually, this says it should, although I've never seen it in use:

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/exchange/guides/E2k3FrontBack/eb063679-51a8-4cc0-9773-e5f1eb6edf31.mspx?mfr=true

Have you had a look at this doc before?

There's also something here:

http://www.msexchange.org/tutorials/Dual-Pass-Through-Authentication-Exchange-2003-Front-EndBack-End.html

I can't find anything (here or anywhere else) to indicate what the Auth settings on the BE Exchange VDir should be.  The default setup is both Integrated and Basic.  I don't know if this needs to be left like that, or not.

atowne -> RE: OWA - Page Cannot Be displayed @ Logon (11.Apr.2006 5:23:33 PM)

I have looked at both documents provided.

I think we have this configured correctly.

leederbyshire -> RE: OWA - Page Cannot Be displayed @ Logon (11.Apr.2006 5:30:59 PM)

Do you get a login prompt when you try to open the FE OWA site?

atowne -> RE: OWA - Page Cannot Be displayed @ Logon (11.Apr.2006 5:35:16 PM)

No, straight to the page cannot be displayed

if we connect to the BE, OWA launches successfully

leederbyshire -> RE: OWA - Page Cannot Be displayed @ Logon (11.Apr.2006 5:38:14 PM)

Since the FE is proxying requests to the BE, there should be a record of this in the BE's IIS logfile (usually in C:\Windows\System32\LogFiles\W3SVC1 ).  Can you see any logfile lines written when you try to access the FE?

atowne -> RE: OWA - Page Cannot Be displayed @ Logon (11.Apr.2006 5:58:17 PM)

The log file on the BE server only shows when I connect to the BE.  There are no entries in the BE log file when connecting through the FE.  In addtion, there are no entries in the FE log file.

Thanks

leederbyshire -> RE: OWA - Page Cannot Be displayed @ Logon (11.Apr.2006 6:02:38 PM)

Can you even get to the Default Web Site on the FE server, with http://FESERVER ?  Or how about trying to access the FE OWA from the FE server's browser itself http://127.0.0.1/exchange ?

atowne -> RE: OWA - Page Cannot Be displayed @ Logon (11.Apr.2006 6:06:19 PM)

Error of Page cannot be found

leederbyshire -> RE: OWA - Page Cannot Be displayed @ Logon (11.Apr.2006 6:08:53 PM)

Can you confirm that the WWW service is running okay on the FE server?

atowne -> RE: OWA - Page Cannot Be displayed @ Logon (11.Apr.2006 6:11:38 PM)

The services applete says it is running, and i do not see errors on the Event log...

I will reboot to verify.

leederbyshire -> RE: OWA - Page Cannot Be displayed @ Logon (11.Apr.2006 6:39:22 PM)

Any chance the Windows Firewall (Control Panel) is active?

atowne -> RE: OWA - Page Cannot Be displayed @ Logon (11.Apr.2006 6:42:00 PM)

No, and it is disabled.

leederbyshire -> RE: OWA - Page Cannot Be displayed @ Logon (11.Apr.2006 6:46:47 PM)

So, the WWW service is running, but you can't even reach the Default Web Site.  I think it would be a good idea to check a few properties of the DWS in IIS Manager.  Make sure that it does not say 'Stopped'.  Make sure that it is configured to use port 80, and that the IP address is 'All Unassigned' (if it has several NICs), and that there is no host header configured.  Unless you ~need a non-standard setting for any of these, that is.

Make sure that 'Log Visits' is not disabled, too.  In case that is the reason that nothing is logged.

atowne -> RE: OWA - Page Cannot Be displayed @ Logon (11.Apr.2006 6:55:01 PM)

All items stated are configured and running.

Could we have something corrupted in the Meta database

leederbyshire -> RE: OWA - Page Cannot Be displayed @ Logon (11.Apr.2006 6:58:47 PM)

The metabase.xml file just reflects what you can already see in IIS Manager, so I think you would have more obvious symptoms.  You can always try the metabase explorer, though I'm not sure how you would tell if something was wrong.

Does the server have a Virus Scanner on it, that needs to be configured to allow port 80 in and out?

atowne -> RE: OWA - Page Cannot Be displayed @ Logon (11.Apr.2006 7:05:51 PM)

Good point about the metabase.xml file.

No virus scanner on the server, no firewall
