After doing more reading, one article (from Microsoft) said that the authentication for Public folders in ESM\HTTP\ and Public in IIS and Exadmin should match. I can edit those in IIS but the one for the Public folders in ESM are greyed out-I can edit all the other folders under HTTP. I have made Public and Exadmin Basic and Integrated (per an article). Public in ESM is set to Basic only. Could this be my problem? And why can't I change the ESM settings?

I am now getting a 503 Service Not Available error.

TIA for your help.

You can't change the settings in ESM because you have (I believe) Forms-Based Auth enabled on your Exchange Virtual Server.  FBA only works with Basic Auth, so it stops you trying to set it to anything else.  The first thing you need to do is remove Integrated from all  the property pages for Public and Exadmin in IIS Manager, and just leave Basic.

I just did that. And yes, we do have FBA invoked. However, Exadmin in ESM is still set to Integrated. Also Exadmin is set to our domain name as the default domain while Public is set to \. I set Exadmin and Public in IIS to \. Still error 503. I changed Exadmin and Public on IIS to the domain name. Same thing-error 503. Is the locked Exadmin setting a problem?

Thanks again for your help.

Mine shows the same (Exchange=Basic, Exadmin=Integrated), so I guess that's not the problem.  When you look at your Public Virtual Directory in IIS Manager, do you have a Create button enabled (and the Configuration button greyed), or do you have a Remove button (with the Configuration button enabled)?  Normally, you would have a Create button.

Mine shows Create also. It also shows Default Application.  Would the Read, Write and Directory Browse have any impact on that?

Thanks again.

All the four checkboxes on the left should be enabled.  Does your Exchange VDir have the Create button also?  I just want to check that they match.

Yes, the Exchange IIS directory has a Create button and all four are selected for Exadmin and Public. Tiz a puzzlement. I am seeing things about the DS2MB and re-registering several dll's and even deleting the IIS public folder and then letting IIS recreate it. Should I be thinking about those alternatives? The only one that makes sense to me is recreating the Public folder be cause it is just an IIS problem.

Thanks.

Deleting just the Public VDir, and re-creating it with this is a good option:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=883380
I think method 3 is the easiest.

Thanks for that link. After reading it though, Method 1 looks like the easiest to control to delete just one folder. I am very concerned about deleting that DS2MB and the effect on the other IIS folders. I have a server setup at home where I will try the process first to see if it changes anything else. WE, (me with your coaching) just got my OWA and OMA working and I don't want to risk that. It may take me a couple of days as I will be off work starting Thursday. I will keep you posted.

Thanks again.

Yes, it does look scary, but I've tried it and it works.  It's a good idea to practise at home first, though.  Let me know what happens.

I am experiencing the same issue with Public Folders only through OWA SBS 2003. I have already tried deleting the public VD, ExAdmin VD and DS2MB (using Metabase Explorer). Although all three were automatically recreated I am still getting the same error http:/1.1 503 Service Unavailable.

The 883380 article refers to deleting all the VDs - Do you guys think this is necessary?

I'm not sure what has caused this in the first place but recently I have installed Outlook Mobile Access, which is working okay.

Many thanks
Mike

Hi mclare.  I think you'd have better luck by starting a new topic for this.  This thread is probably too long for anyone else to read now, except for SusanVV and me, and neither of us has figured out an answer yet.  If you start a new topic, then you should get some new suggestions.

It turned out that one of our administrators had created a new Public Folders Tree from with in Exchange System Manager.

If you are experiencing this problem it is worth checking the Public Folders object in
System Manager - First Administrative Group - Folders - Public Folders - Servers - <Servername> - First Storage Group - Public Folders

is pointing to the TREE Structure defined in

System Manager - Folders - Public Folders

Good luck - This resolved the issue for me...

Another test is to create a new virtual directory in Exchange system manager under HTTP\Exchange virtual server and call it for example Publictest or something. Once created, make sure it gets propagated to IIS and then try to browse it.

Hi all,
I checked my settings for my Public folders in ESM and found the following:
The folder tree type is MAPI     Is this correct?
The security on First Admin/Server/Mail etc contains one more security principal that has rights that the Folders/Public Folders     Is this right? I have not touched the security on either.
When I access the Folders\Public folders I got a logon that defaulted to administrator. When I signed in I got the message that the public store was not accessable might have been dismounted. I clicked on connect to and then the folder opened up.
There is nothing in Folders/Public folders in the right pane. Should something be there?

TIA for the help. I have not yet deleted and restored folders.

'MAPI clients' is what it says on mine.  You should see your Public Folders in the right-hand pane.  On the General page, do you see the correct public store listed in the table?  If not, right-click Public Folders, and select Connect To , and then choose your PF store.

Hi Lee,
Thanks for your continued responses. I have just read, on this site, that Public folders in the MAPI Public folder tree will not be able to be seen using HTTP or OWA and General purpose Public Folders will not be able to be seen in Outlook. Os this true? Is there a way to set the Public folders for both?

TIA again.

Well, it says MAPI in my ESM, and I can see them in both.  Just make sure that it is connected to the correct store.

Yes it is connected to the correct store in ESM. The Exadmin directory is the same in ESM and IIS--\\.\Backoffice. Public is set to Public Folders (exactly that way-no path) in ESM and is set to \\.\Backoffice\domain.com\Public Folders. Is this correct?

The other thing that I noticed is that the domain in ESM and in IIS are different for Authentication. ESM is set to \ and IIS is set to our domain with no .com. Is this correct?

The documents that I referred to are Administering Public Folders with Exchange 2003 and PFMIGRATE on this site by Marc Grote and www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/exchange/2003/pubfolders_faq.mspx.

TIA for your help. I am going to be bald from tearing my hair out by the time this is over.
