Hi all, I did an exchange migration from 2000-2003. There were no errors reported during the mailbox migration. This morning when the users started to login some users were crashing to desktop when, in outlook, they clicked on their sent items. The same mailbox could be accessed via the web interface with no problems on any folders. I got around it by doing an exmerge of the data out of the mailbox, deleteing the mailbox, re-creating the mailbox and then merging the data back in. a few more people have been coming up with this error and I'd like to see if i can troubleshoot it. It seems like outlook2000 does not have this problem, but i need to do more testing to verify this. I tried this with a plain install of outlook 2k3 and a completely patched version of outlook 2k3. Any ideas or suggestions would be appreciated!

Was the migration done on the same server(s) or new servers? If new servers, then Outlook will have profiles pointing to the old server, you need to re-create user profiles again...

thanks for the reply. The migration was done to a new server running win2k3 rc2 I did re-create the the profiles and it still dropped to desktop. The wierd part is that there's no error message. Windows never asks to report an error. Things have gone well since the exmerge but I'm trying to figure this out. I'd hate to have to dfo this on a 1500 mailbox merge. Can you think of anything else I can try?

Very strange. Are there any repeating errors or warnings on the Exchange server? Can users login via OWA?

When users login via OWA everything is fine. The last time i was there there were no errors reported to the exchange error. It looks like its the outlook 2003 client. There was one mailbox where the sent items would cause outlook2k3 to crash, No error on screen, no wanting to send error report, nothing in applications log, it just stopps. OWA was fine. Logging into the mailbox with outlook2k works fine. I then do the following steps exmerge -> delete mailbox -> purge mailbox -> recreate mailbox -> exmerge into mailbox then everything works. I have not been able to find anything on this anywhere. I'm guessing that there is an indexing problem (difference?) somewhere in the mailbox that outlook 2k3 cant deal with. doing the exmerge out and back in fixes it somehow. Also these people were using outlook 2k3 clients on the old 2000 exchange server. Any ideas about where to look for clues would be appreciated. I'll be onsite tomorow. thanks!

Sorry Nahmus, but did you said "Windows Server 2003 - RC2" or do you mean "Windows Server 2003 - R2" both are different Editions, one is before the final release of Windows Server 2003 which is the RC2 and one is the newer release of Windows Server 2003 which is R2, so which product did you install as your Exchange Server Operating System ? RC2 or R2 ?

I am having a very similar issue with my migration from Exchnge 5.5 to Exchange 2003. Outlook just crashes or sometimes users are unable to delete items from their deleted items folder. OWA does work fine though, Any thoughts or solutions. Thanks in advance

The version was R2 not RC2. At this point I have re-built all of the mailboxes and still have no idea what caused it. @phfredd These are the steps that I used to get around the errors. I would do a backup first just in case. 1) use EXmerge to export the data from the affected mailbox. (make sure you are using a current copy). I use the two-step version of the export-import. This will create a .pst file on the disk. 2) Delete the mailbox. Wait until you get the "red x" on the mailbox then purge it. This usually takes anywhere from 5-15 min so if this does work it might be a good idea to do this in groups. You can always right click on the mailboxes and run the cleanup agent to speed this up. 3) Once the mailbox has been purged then re-create the mailbox. Wait about 5-10 min or so then run EXmerge again. At this point you should see the mailboxes with a zero size. Merge the data back into the mailbox and you should be done. If you get any errors on the merge back into the mailbox look at the exmerge log file. Sometimes the merge file created when you exported the data is different than the merge file that EXmerge looks for to put back into the mailbox. The log file will show you what file was created. You can always re-name the file to match what EXmerge is looking for when importing I hope this helps.

Thanks for the input. That is basically the same procedure I have been following and it seems to work fine. I am just concerned that I will have to do this to all of the mailboxes at some point. I would like to know what caused it or if there is a faster way to fix it. Thanks again.

Hi, I've got this exact problem as well but couldnt figure out what happened.. Anyone out there knows what went wrong? I used Exchange Move Mailbox wizard for this migration from 2K to 2K3. While some users are OK, there are a considerable amount of users that encountered this problem.

I've had the same problem having migrated Exchange 2000 to Exchange 2003 using new hardware and have discovered 2 things that may be of help 1. Having View > Toolbars > Web enabled causes the Outlook 2000 client to crash2. Try using the following switches: - From a MS Command Prompt > C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\office.exe /resetfolders Other switches include /cleanfreebusy/cleanfinders/cleanreminders/cleanviews/checkclient There's also a post Office 2000 SP3 Hotfix (if that's what you're running)

Just experienced the same problem. After migrating from Exchange 2000 to 2003 on different hardware. Some users reported an out of resources error when looking at certain folders, especially Deleted Items. Other users were not able to delete items out of their Deleted Items folder. They could delete items if they held down shift and pressed delete though. We tried re-creating the Outlook profile and the Windows profile. This did not help in most cases. To get these users up and running we moved their mailboxes back to the original Exchange server, and they were fine. We got this problem on about 6 users out of 250+ Was unable to find anything on this issue on the Microsoft KB.

We solved the problem. It was on the client side. Any version of Outlook earlier than 2002 SP2 was the issue. The problem did not show up in Outlook 2003. If we upgraded the Outlook 2002 to SP3 it solved the problem.

thats wierd. thats the exact opposite of what I saw. Outlook 2000 clients did not have any problems. It was alwats the 2k3 clients. After rebuilding all of the mailboxes we no longer have any problems. It even fixed some issues with the OAB.

I have also just performed a migration from Exchange 2000 to 2003 as well: SvrA (2000 Server) to SvrB (2003 Server) using the move mailbox tool, no errors reported. Outlook 2003 clients (most fully patched, not all) mostly on Windows XP Pro (one on Windows 2000 Wkstn) all crash when navigating between Mail, Contacts, Calendar, etc. NB When clicking Calendar in the left hand navigation area, for example, immediately after launching the client, the highlighted item is Calendar, but the right hand pane has not refreshed (as it would be normally) and remains showing the mail messages. When clicking on the user's Calendar in the list of available calendars (top left hand pane), the client crashes. Very similar to the issues some of you have had... except all users have been affected! (Oh, the few users with new mailboxes on the Exchange 2003 server are OK!) I wish I had found this thread while preparing a Exch2000-2003 migration!!! BIG QUESTION: Has anyone found a hotfix / workaround other than using Exmerge? TIA

I've been searching on and off for a solution to this and have yet to find any. It seems to be a hit or miss problem. I've talked to others that have done the migration with no problems whatsoever. I'm still at a loss for what caused this. If i do find something I'll be sure to post up here.

An integrity check on the new information stores fixed all our folder / not being able to delete message problems after the migration. The command line we used was this: isinteg -s server_name -fix -test alltests Had to run it twice to get a clean run with no errors/warnings/fixes.

The only other things that helped us with this problem were re-creating the outlook and/or windows profile and making sure Outlook 2002 was at SP3. We didn't have any Outlook 2000 in our org though.
