mtal18 -> Upgrading the Exchange Server (26.Apr.2006 1:03:39 AM)

I'm going to be upgrading the exchange server soon as the old server is outdated and low on diskspace.  I'm currently moving the database files to a new drive so I can do an offline defrag and then I want to move to the new server.

Currently the Exchange server is setup on an older IBM machine using a RAID configuration.  I'm going to moving to a newer Dell PowerEdge also with RAID.  From what I understand about exchange... I'm going to install Server 2000 and Exchange 2000 on the new machine and then move the database files over to the new server.  We're also running a desktop fax program called RightFax which needs to be setup on the exchange server as well, this should not be a problem.   After I have the new server setup correctly do I just transfer the database files across the network to the new server or is there more to it?

I'm going to start the offline defrag tonight so any information regarding the 'migration' (if you can even call it that with exchange 2000) to the new server would be appreciated... any road bumps or things I might want to consider.

Update:  The offline defrag went well.  I was able to free up 7 gigs!

One issue... one of our accounting people had a list in her contacts with some passwords on it.  This morning that list was gone, but all of her other contact info is still there.  I've looked through our backups and I cant seem to access any of the MBX (inbox / contact) data.  Any ideas on how I could recover this contact file?
