We are in the process of upgrading from Exchange 2000 to
Exchange 2003 on a new windows 2003 server. We currently only have windows
2000 servers on our domain so this will be our first windows 2003 server on
our domain. However, we are running into difficulties. Please could you
help?
Firstly, re article
http://www.msexchange.org/pages/article_p.asp?id=708
We have completed step one i.e.(Prepare your Network for Windows Server 2003)
without any problems.
When we get to the second step under (Install Windows server 2003) i.e. In
AD move the server object to the desired OU. By this did you mean on our
existing 2000 domain controller go into active directory and move the new
2003 server into the domain controller group? Am I correct in thinking this?
And if so I have attempted this but the new server appears in the domain
controller group but when I go into its properties it comes back with a role
as workstation or server.
Also, I tried going to new 2003 server and running dcpromo and click add
additional domain controller for an existing domain but it comes back with
an error message re the version of active directory.
Can you help please as I am a bit confused at this point.
Thanks
Tatianna

You want this to be a member server, not a DC for a lot of resaons
In our Active directory, we have a separate OU we created for servers so we can apply certain group policies to the servers alone.

Your member 2003 server does not go into the domain controller ou!

So it is probably  already in the default computer container shown in A.D. "computers"

Leave it there for now if you have not already done the extra of having a new O.U. for servers. (you can do that later)

Repeat do not try to run DC Promo on this 2003 server!

Good words to live by...unless your exchange server was a DC, that could complicate things a bit.

Yes, our Exchange 2000 server on WIn 2k server was a DC to begin with and still is. Our new Exchange 2003 is currently a member server.

What would be best practise, leave Exchange 2003 as a member server? and put active directory on a new windows 2003 server Domain Controller? and whats involved?

Please advise?

Leave new exchange server as a member server.
Migrate all exchange to that  box.
Build another server and run dc promo on that. Transfer all roles to new DC

Thats great, thanks for all your help. Just another few questions to get it all total clear to me.

On another new windows 2003 server, would i have to run anything before I run dcpromo and also would you have any detailed documentation on 'transferring the roles to new DC' and also once I have trandsferred the roles will the active directory exist and be identical on both the Exchange Server and also the new Server?

Some reading is in order now
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;325379

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/555040/en-us

If this were my project I would bring in another windows 2000 as a dc.
How to tranfer dc roles
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;255690

Finish my exchange project
Then plan to upgrade dc's to 2003
I would make this 2 distinct projects!

Would I be better to upgrade my existing windows 2000 dc (my old exc 2000 server currently using ad) to a 2003 dc? or would it be best to purchase a new 2000 server promote it to dc, move roles and then upgrade to 2003?

Thks again

1. It would be best to purchase a new 2000 (buy 2003 O.S. but install 2000) server promote it to dc, move roles
2.Complete exchange move
3. Retire old exchange server.
4. upgrade D.C. to 2003
5.  Use old retired server to reload and (install second D.C.) just as a safety net I always recommend a second D.C.
