i am using the exchange 2000 and win-2000 sbs . my database size is get increased up to 6 GB ( priv1.edb = 6.5 GB and Priv1.stb = 1.5 GB) and now the space in local drive is very less.. now what i need to do ..can i defrag the database or can i transfer the data base to another partition..what are the steps to maintain the data base.

Please post some more details about the server.
How many partitions? Size? free space? What is the raid configuration?

I am having 6 Partition on my server.

Total Free

c:\ 15.5 GB 1 GB
d:\ 2 GB 900 MB
e:\ 20 GB 15 GB
f:\ 17 GB 10 GB
g:\ 20 GB 7 GB
h:\ 92 GB 88 GB

m:\ 15.5 GB 1 GB

I have not configured raid on my sever.

Hi John,

The first thing u need to make siome free space available to ur Server because it cod get problem any time..

Check your Transaction log files size.. how much space they are taking, take the full backup of Exchange so that size gets reduced..

Then use offline defragmentation by eseutil /d to defragment the database..

HI..

I have already set the size of log up to 1 MB ..can i transfer the database to another partition..what will be afftect of database to another partion on my exchange...If i defrag the database the size will decrease ???If i take the full back up of my exchange the size will decrease ??how can i defrag the database off line...please help me to solve this issue..

Hi john...

how u set the size of log upto 1 mb...

you can transfer the database to another partition for that u need to chage the path of datbase file by chagning it from system manager -> go to the properties of mailbox store - > database tab and change the path of edb and stm files.

after defrag the database size will decrease...

after taking full backup the size reserved by transaction log files will get reduced..

hey dude,

look with regards defrag (offline), you would have to have 110% of the orignal DB size from the place you run the defrag.

**You would be able to decide the amount of free space by event id 1216 or 1217 in the application log.**

For eg. C:\program files\exchsrvr\bin>eseutil /d "path to your DB size"

With regards E2k , options in hand.

1) Take the stores offline, and run the offline defrag (rem it takes 5-8Gb /hr) and followed by IsInteg to repair the logical corruption if any.

OR

2)
a)In Mission critical situations, you could mount from blank stores and run the offline defrag in the back ground on some other drive.
b)After the offline defrag gets over you could take pst out of the blank store using Exmerge.
c)Check the option in the database option of the MB store properties "This database can be overwritten by a restore"
d)Replace the priv1.edb and priv1.stm with original DB.

before doing the offline defragmentation will it be advisable to remove all transection logs..and take the full backup of exchange..after it my database size will decrease or not??Where i can find this transection logs...if i do the offline defragmentation on another partition will it be work..???

If you do take a online backup or offline backup your DB size never would shrink.

DB size can only shrink only and only by offline defrag.

With regards, to removing transaction logs ( you can check that in your storage group properties)

Now, to your question should you remove your log files:- well if you take an online backup your log files will get purged, so you would have jus 4 files in your data folder - e00, res1, res2 and e00.chk file.

So, relax

Thanks for your reply....one thing i want to know that if i stop the exchange service and dismount the database and copy it to the another location the complete folder of MDBDATA and then give the path in the database location and mount the database again will it be work .....if i move it on the compressed partition on my server ..will it be work and i need to decompress the drive and then start ..pls guide me the procedure of dismount and mount the database steps also...

Don't do copy paste...

Just go for offline defragmentation.. thats so easy and will reduce the size ou priv1.edb and .stm databases..

To dismount the stores..

start - program files - Microsoft Exchange -  System manager
Explore the Orgnization - Administrative Group -  Servers - yourserver - Storage group - right click on Mailbox Store and click Dismount Store, - Right click on Public Folder Store and Click Dismount.

U ll see that both boxes have now red crossed Mark

close all the windows

then use eseutil /d to dismount the database from command prompt..

So it is the only way to decrease the size of data base by defragmenting it..is it so..and one morething i want to know that in between of defragment process if suddenly power goes down( Like we dont have heavy UPS Backup System ) my database will going to crash...if suppose i am having the complete backup of database like full backup of OS and Exchange can i make a complete restore and get the data base mount on the same partition...like it will work in the same posiotn in this case.....pls guide me.....

Hey John,

Look if you UPS system is weak or if your scared of ur database being crashed during power outage.

I would strongly advise you to dismount the store gracefully and take an offline back up of your DB (i.e. if at all you have that much space on your Disk)

Once that is done chill, relax and go ahead and do what you want with your database.

Second scenario :-

If you do not have space in your disk to store the copy of your DB.
You have to bank upon an online backup (tape - backup).
Incase, god forbid if your DB crashes
You got 2 options.....restore from backup...worse case scenario if backup fails run eseutil /p.......

So, always make sure that the backups you take are good backups...
