How to reduce Database Size - 25.May2006 8:52:32 AM

We have some 600 e-mail users on our single server Exchange Organization.  We have Exchange 2000 on Windows Server System 2003.

Now, the private database (priv.edb and priv.stm) size has reached almost to 16GB of size.  I don't see the users occupying such a large size.  How do I reduce the size of the private database?
And how do I defragment the database and recover some file size?

Also, what does this priv.edb and priv.stm file stores in it?

Regards,
Denis

Hi Denis...

Try this link ... to defrag ur exchange database..

http://www.msexchange.org/tutorials/Exchange-ISINTEG-ESEUTIL.html

priv1.edb file  stores all mailboxes information which is kept as a database file.
priv1.stm file is used for owa...

Thanks and Best regards...

Thanks for your valued reply.

But, I do not use OWA.  Then also my STM file appears to occupy more than 5GB of size.

What is the reason for that?

Thanks in advance.

Denis

Hi denis..

See the .edb file stores the mesaages for MAPI clients like Outkook..

.stm files stores same for non MAPI client.. Like OWA

when ever a user accesses his mail account by using NON MAPI client, exchange checks the format of that message and if its not MAPI supproted format  then it converts the format and stores it in STM file.

Thanks for your support.

But, every user in my organization accesses their mail using Outlook.  Each and every user accesses their mail using Outlook.  Not a single user uses non-outlook clients.  There are some users for whom we have forwarded their mails to external public free mail accounts (like yahoo, gmail, hotmail, etc.).

Then how does my STM file be such big (its 5GB)?

Also, can you tell me how to reduce the size of STM file?

Regards,
Denis

First, determine how much of that space is actually being used by Exchange.  Look at your Application Log and find the most recent 1221 Event.  There should be one generated every day.  Report back what it says.

Description:
The Exchange store 'First Storage Group\Mailbox Store' is limited to 50 GB. The current physical size of this database (the .edb file and the .stm file) is 90 GB. If the physical size of this database minus its logical free space exceeds the limit of 50 GB, the database will be dismounted on a regular basis.
For more information, click http://www.microsoft.com/contentredirect.asp.

The above shows the condition of my mail server, any help would be really appreciate because of that huge size daily database dismount and we need to mount it to work properly.

Sorry, I should have been a bit more specific.  There will be a 1221 Event for each the Public (public folders) and Private (mailbox) stores.  You listed the one for the Public Store, but that isn't the one in question.  Please find another 1221 Event that names the Mailbox Store and post the contents.
