Hello everyone need some help with the MDBDATA log is increasing rad pally and theirs only 1.27 GB of hard drive space form a 33.8 GB hard drive. What is the process to clean the logs can someone help out.

You want to make sure the logs are committed to the database files before doing anything to them.  Most people use an Exchange-aware backup application like NTBACKUP or Veritas BackupExec to automatically verify then flush the logs as part of its backup routine.

Hey son,
When was the last time maintenance was done on the exch box? Try to perform an offline maintenance if possible. Prepare to take the server offline for about 8 to 10 hrs. If you need assistance pet us know. Also check your users mailbox sizes. As always, they don't care about drive space. They think you pick em from a tree. I usually send out an email ever 6 mths and have my users audit their mail boxes, deleting emails not relating to the business like the "hi, what you had for lunch..." emails. Then about a week after I run the offline maintenance and I get back about 2 to 3 GB one time I go back 8GB.

I haven't done any maintenance on the Exchange I'm new with Exchange after our Exchange admin quit on us I need to stepped up.  When you said an offline maintenance what is the process on that will that clear the logs and clear hard drive space? I agree on the users mailbox sizes they don't care I will send a email today to start deleting email. Can you give me more guidance on the offline maintenance I appreciate your help.

If your EDB and STM files are taking up most of your disk space, then:

How to defragment with the Eseutil utility (Eseutil.exe).

If your E0xxxxxx.LOG files are taking up a lot of disk space, then either flush them as described above, or turn on circular logging.

Yes the EOxxxxxx.LOG files is taking up a lot of disk space and is increasing fast, what you mean by flush them? I have the .LOG back up as NTBACKUP.  Let me see if I got this right when you say flush them you meant to back them and then remove them (delete) is that right or am I wrong....(corect me if I'm wrong).

I can't remember what it's called in NTBACKUP, but in Veritas BackupExec there's an option to Flush Committed Logs.

I tried a full NTBACKUP but did not flush the logs,it backups the logs but they are not been flush now we have Tivoli for our backup does any one nows if Tivoli flush the logs files or what is another solution to for this problem I need some more help on this issue.

I wouldn't be suggesting circular loggings if the user is new to exchange. it's more for DR purpose. Also, it's not recommended by MS

You said that you ran a backup and it didn't flush the logs.

Run it again but follow the steps in this link:

If you are only doing full backups there is no reason not to turn on Circular logging.  I was having the same issue and turned it on immediately after finding out that we only did full backups daily.

The logs should have been flushed automatic when a full back-up has been done.
