OWA POrt forwarding - 11.Jul.2006 1:12:00 AM

Hello, here is my situation. I have a single domain with the Web site on one server and exchange on a different server. I can use port forwarding to get to the web and previously when I hd the web on the same server as exchenge my clients were able to use OWA just fine. Once the web and subsequent port forwarding was changed obviously they cannot see the exchange server. I had hope to fix with a DNS entry but that doesn't seem to be the answer.
Any suggestions would be helpful

Thanks

You might try using SSL on OWA.  Then you can forward port 443 (used for HTTPS/SSL) to your Exchange server.  I don't think there's another way around this problem.  Except for putting your other Web site on the Exchange server, alongside OWA.

Thanks, Lee thats what I was afraid of. I need SSL for portions of the website so can't use it for this purpose. I was hoping to seperate exchange from the web site but it doesn't look possible

thanks again

You could try telling the Default Web Site on the Exchange server to use a different port for TCP, say 81 or 8080.  You would then need to forward that port to the Exchange server, but you would also need to specify the port number in the URL that you use for OWA; e.g. http://servername:port/exchange .

Good thought Lee.. It works just fine. I set the default web site on the exchange server to port 81 and changed the port forwarding in the router. the only down side is that the client needs to add the :81 to the URL.

thanks for the help

Jim

Hi,

To get around this issue 'properly' without specifying the port you need more than one external IP.

The other alternative is to have on your web only server a Virtual server that has your OWA FQDN using host headers, and in the root and the /exchange directories a .asp redirect that includes the port.

Something like

<%@ Language=VBScript %>
<% Response.Redirect "https://mail.server.com:8080/exchange" %>

This however this will not work for ActiveSync.

Cheers
