trevorc -> Remove an offline Exchange Server (11.Jul.2006 11:51:31 AM)

I had two Exchange Servers 2000 running on my network. One of them (SERVER02) had all the mailboxes, public folders and stuff whilst the other one (SERVER01) was practicaly empty. The reason for having an empty exchange server is that SERVER01 was the first Exchange Server in the network but since this was an old machine, i got a new one SERVER02 and transfered all the mailboxes, public folders and settings to it.

Recently, the RAID on SERVER01 crashed and now i cannot switch it on again. I did not loose any data because i had already transfered it to SERVER02 but i now would like to remove any traces of SERVER01 from the network.

1. Since SERVER01 cannot be switched on, i cannot use the dcpromo.exe to demote it and remove Exchange.
2. From the Exchange System Manager, can i just delete SERVER01 from the First Administrative Group ?
3. I have read and done whatever there is on MS Article Q307917 and things seem to be working well.

Anyone knows how i can remove the Exchange Server? Also i need to remove SERVER01 from the list of DC but since this server was also the Schema Master, things are not so easy.

Any help and/or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

More safe and easy way to remove an offline server is to use Exchang system manager, locate wanted server and remove it simply

so if i simply remove it from the Exchange System Manager, anything pointing to this Exchange will either get deleted or transfered to the new Server? Thanks.

Hi Trevorc,

307917 is a pretty good article to follow in cases where we had SERVER01 in place. But now it is not there and i dont know to what extend things remain on the old server.

My sincere advice would be to remove the old server using ADSIedit or ESM (I recommend this step because there in no point in having it there). Now once you delete the server tools like EXBPA will start detecting problems because we would have broken joints which we need to fix and EXBPA is darn good in detecting broken joints.

So next run the EXBPA tool with a health scan and include the servers, AG and ORG name. Fix errors like sitefolder server deleted, OAB server deleted etc.. using the resolution that EXBPA provides..
