i went and checked... both cards were bond to everything, but card1 (active one was second)

I moved it to the top of the list.

No change

from old_server I am getting the famous "... could not open a connection...."

from local_host telnet does function

1. Is SMTP even installed? Is the SMTP service running?
2. Is it bound to an IP address or just 'All Unassigned'?
3. What Authentication methods are enabled? Is Anonymous enabled?
4. Is any filtering enabled on SMTP?

1) yes, yes (restarted numerous times with no errors during the course of diagnose)
2) it was set to "all unassigned" (as the production server is) [but i set it to the correct IP - no change]
3) Authentication method is anonymous
4) no filtering enabled.

thanks for the troubleshooting ideas.

how can i force SMTP to a different port? like port 26?

You can Edit or Add a new port for SMTP in the Advanced properties of the SMTP Virtual Server.

What other software does the server have? Does it have antivirus on it? In McAfee VirusScan Enterprise it has some port blocking features. Turn those off.

As mentioned before no firewall no av software.  simply windows 2003 standard sp1 and exchange 2003 enterprise sp2

Ok the smtp is now accepting telnet to port 25 and i can send basic commands to create emails... however no mail delivers.

the new_server will send mail to an external address, but not to an internal address on itself or to old_server

The Routing groups are enabled (and we only have one routing group)

We now have two connectors (was just one)
Both of the SMTP connectors mirror each other.

old_server is the original W2k E2k3 server bridge head
it's connector lists local bridge heads as old_server and new_server

the new_server w2k3 e2k3 connector - lists only old_server on local bridgeheads
is this the correct setup?

everything else in the connectors is the same

Hi,

On the exchnage server that is not accepting telnet connections on port 25 from the other server, can you telnet to port 25 locally (using 127.0.0.1)

Cheers

Hi,

I'd missed that.

if you connect via telnet and send an email to an account with a mailbox on the new server, do you see it in a queue ?

Cheers

yes, i can freeze all ques and trace it's path

and see it make it way from pending submission, to lookup, to routing, to delivery

but it never goes anywhere and no error in event viewer application log.

Hi,

The fact that it is receiving the email and then sending it through the various queues means that it isn't an SMTP problem.

Can you please retest sending mail to mailboxes on the old_server from a mailbox on the new_server, just in case that was linked to the port 25 problem.

Can you also please retest sending mail to an external domain from a mailbox on the new_server

Are both servers listed in the SMTP connector, or have you setup a new connector for the new_server ?

I know that these are not directly linked to the issue with inbound email.

Cheers

1) retest complete - mail delivers - but the receipent reply back never arrives
1b) email to account on new_server like bob@company.com from bob's account (OWA) - no email
1c) email to another account on new_server like bobtest@company.com rom bob's account (OWA) - no email
2)resend to external address - works

Hi,

Yes, I was expecting the delivery notification to fail.

Do you have anything in the badmail folder ? C:\Program Files\Exchsrvr\Mailroot\Vsi 1\BadMail

It also might be worthwhile enabling message tracking to see if it can find where the inbound emails are failing

this user account is on new_server

mail is delivering to external and old_server addresses.

Hi,

Is this Ex2k3 std or Enterprise ?

Are there any mailboxes on the new_server ?

If there are any please move them to the old_server

If they don't move please try creating a test mailbox on the old_server send it an email and login to it (OWA is fine) then try and move it to the new_server, then move it back to the old_server

Cheers

Hi,

Just re-read from the top, you have Enterprise

Create a new storage group on the new_server

Create a new mailbox store in the new storage group

Create a new mailbox in the new storage group and login to it using OWA

Try sending an email to this new mailbox from a mailbox on the old_server

Cheers

1) Ex2k3 Enterprise for new_server - Ex2k3 Standard for old_server
2) two mailboxes on new_server
3) moved 1 mailbox from new_server to old_server  - ok
test the moved account from old_server - emailed account name from self using OWA - ok
moved 1 mailbox back from old_server to new_server - not so happy - OWA will not log user on - though it doesnt error out either

is that what you wanted me to try?  look like you might be onto something... but what?

Hi,

It can take a short while for Exchage to 'know' that the mailbox has been moved.

I had an issue last year on an E2k server where internal mail stopped running for users on one storage group, mailboxes on other storage groups didn't have the problem.

As the server was due to be decomissioned after migrating to a different AD I didn't bother investigating further, just created a new storage group and moved the mailboxes.

Hence my suggestion to try a new storage group.

Cheers

1) created new storage group on new_server - ok
2) created new mailbox store on new_server - ok
3) created user in AD, added exchange properties, and pointed it to the second mailbox store on new_server
user's mailbox does NOT show in the second mailbox store, nor the first on new_server
verified user is active and verified user has exchange properties.

Hi,

The mailbox doesn't exist untill you either login to it, or send it an email.

Or is your second quoted part trying to ay that you have the same issue ?

Cheers
