Hi,

The setup:

Exchange server 2003 SP2
Microsoft Outlook 2003

  • The PC hosting the Outlook profile was formated
  • Its hard drive was attached as a slave to another PC
  • Data recovey software was able to recover the Outlook.ost file (possible with errors).Showed the file in a $$$named-folder
  • ost2pst.exe did not work (error 01110....) . Seems in-compatible with Outlook 2003
  • Recovery for exchange 2.0 reported a corrupted ost file

The exchange server itself has no trace of old data.Only new emails are shown
The client has no PST file even , Outlook creates the OST file automatically at log-on

Any ideas please?

Thanks

Is there really a need to recover the OST?  This is only the cached mailbox information and contains the contents of the mailbox at the time it was last synchronized.  Is it significantly different that what is on the server now?

Hi,

From what you are describing, the file was a .pst, not a .ost file.

If mail was delivered to the .pst file, then if the .pst is lost then the mail is lost.

What size is the .ost file ?

Have you tried converting the .ost to a .pst ?

Sorry.

Cheers

How critical is this?  What state is your backups in, and what type of backups do you perform (Infostore / Brick-level)?  I can guess how this situation arose as I have had similar issues in the past.  Those experiences have forced changes to my Exchange environments in terms of backups and archival.  This is another way of saying you might be out of luck.

I am also interested in Arne's question - what size is the .OST file?

Does the user's mailbox still exist, or was it deleted?  If deleted, how long ago?

Hi,

Are you able to open OL in Offline mode?
If yes then probably you can use OL to create PST and move mails from OST to PST.

Moving forward to this issue.
Please make sure you configure OL in cached mode. Now the question here comes is why even after being in cached mode .OST does'nt work.

Configuring OL in cached mode is not the only option available for recovery in the future.

You have to configure OL to work in OFFLINE mode as well. This will help you to recover data even if the exchange server is completely crashed.

Hope you plan such disasterrecovery options from now onwards..
