Currently we are looking to upgrade our domain to windows 2003, we are currently at exchange 2000 & windows 2000. Is it possible to upgrade our domain controls to windows 2003 AD and leave the exchange environment at windows 2000 & exchange 2000 until a later date.?

Wil exchage 2000 work in an Active directory 2003 domain?

Exchange 2000 works just fine in AD 2003. The only time there's a "problem" (and, really, it's fine, it's just not "supported" by Microsoft) is when you are talking about the specific box Exchange is installed on. For that box, you have to upgrade Exchange 2000 to Exchange 2003 before you upgrade its operating system from Win 2000 to Win 2003.

So, IF one or more of the domain controllers you mentioned also happen to be a full-blown Exchange server (and not just a domain controller with Exchange System Manager tools installed on it), then no, you shouldn't upgrade that/those domain controller(s) to Windows 2003. But you can upgrade all the other domain controllers to Win 2003.

If none of your domain controllers have Exchange server installed on them, then you can upgrade.

Microsoft wanted give us as much flexibility as they could. It's only when you are considering the specific box that has Exchange that you have to worry about the order of upgrading.

Make sense?
