I have spent countless hours getting this far... Please Help! Recently i got hold of osme software titles (windows server 2003 enterprise, exchange server 2003 enterprise) My setup is as follows: My home domain rapid-pc-rescue.local There are 3 computers on that domain... File-Server 192.168.2.x Domain-Server 192.168.2.x Exchange-Server 192.168.2.x I have a DSL connection from ATT Internet Service, THey provide me a dynamic IP I then have a Belkin Wireless Router (192.168.2.1) that is setup as my gateway I have used Berry Gerber's "Mastering Microsoft Exchange Server 2003" to get this far... Moreover, My webiste domain is Rapid-Pc-Rescue.com This website is hosted by Ace-Net.com So far i can send mail but can not receive, I have setup an SMTP Connector to connect to mail.rapid-pc-rescue.com which basically the ace-net smart host. The problem is that i can not receive mail. None of the servers have any security on the basically all ports open, Router has port forwording for the dns to domain-server since it is running a DNS Server, and SMTP, HTTP, for the exchange server. My dream is to use my ISP's DNS and have them be my SMTP SmartHost, However their tech's are too dumb for something like that. Finally, I can provide more information if neccessary, I can "Telnet exchange-server 25" only from the exchange server. If i try from other computer it fails. Please Help...

Is your Internet domain name registered? Who is hosting your DNS (who is resolving DNS queries for your domain)? Does your MX record point to your Exchange server or gateway or something else? Do you have a reverse DNS entry (required for some mail recipients)? If all of the above are configured, what happens if you attempt to Telnet to the IP address in your MX record via port 25?

I have a DNS Server setup, It was setup when i did DCPROMO on my domain-server, (i think this is the problem) Under forword lookup zones i have 3 zones _msdcs,Rapid-Pc-Rescue.local Rapid-Pc-Rescue.com Rapid-Pc-Rescue.local Rapid-Pc-Rescue.com (NS) domain-server.rapid-pc-rescue.local (NS) mail.rapid-pc-rescue.com (A) Host 209.51.149.250 (MX) mail.rapid-pc-resuce.com (MX) exchange-server.rapid-pc-rescue.local Rapid-Pc-Rescue.local _msdcs _sites _tcp _udp Domain DNS Zones Forest DNS Zones TAPI3Directory (NS) domain-server.rapid-pc-rescue.local (A) Host domain-server (A) Host file-server (A) Host exchange-server Revers Lookup Zones 209.51.149.250 192.168.2.5

telnet works with mail.rapid-pc-rescue.com but fails when exchange-server.rapid-pc-rescue.local (only works from exchange-server)

I was able to Telnet to your server (gateway?), but the message was rejected after I attempted to send. It could be because of the recipient I used (postmaster@rapid-pc-rescue.com). If your MX record points to your gateway, can you view the connection log to look for my transmission? I'm hoping it will shed some light on the delivery failure. Do your user objects in AD have SMTP addresses?

my test e-mail is Support@rapid-pc-rescue.com you can use that..... How can i check if my mx points to my gateway (Belkin Routr?)

I seem to be running into a Symantec issue on my end. I'm about to leave this office for the day, but I'll test again in a few hours when I'm in position at home. I don't know that you'll be able to see anything unless your Belkin Router has some sort of logging function.

Whatever you can do to help i appreciate. Moreover I think the problem is within my DNS because the DNS server is fuctioning great within my network however it does not have a static ip on the internet side and therfore is running into problems. However, i did setup dns forowrding, to forowrd to my isp dns servers 68.94.156.1....If that help...

You could also test this yourself. Here is the list of commands I was using: telnet mail.rapid-pc-rescue.com 25 helo mydomain.com mail from:me@mydomain.com rcpt to:support@rapid-pc-rescue.com data subject: Test message from UemuraD This is a test. Please reply if received. . quit Note that there is a blank line (Enter with no characters or spaces) immediately after my message body, and after that a single period followed by Enter. Also note that in place of "mydomain.com" and "me@mydomain.com" I had my actual corporate domain name and SMTP address. I am getting a Symantec error on my side when the message attempts to be delivered, and it looks like it might be my desktop firewall. I'm determining whether that's the case or not, but I'll try again later tonight from a different site.

Sorry, I didn't get a chance to do this at home last night. What were the results of your attempt? How far could you go and how did it fail? Your answers may point to where the problem is. I'll see if I can test this again in a different manner today.

I sent you a test message from my corporate Email system, and according to my gateway it appears to have gotten through. Check the support mailbox and send a reply if you got it.

I think thats the problem i'm having you see the messages are being delivered to my linux server that is hosting my website not my exchange server. Telnet, I was able to login to telnet mail.rapid-pc-rescue.com then i ran the helo rapid-pc-rescue.com mail from:support@rapid-pc-rescue.com rcpt to:administrator@rapid-pc-rescue.com this line failed with errors "500 unrecognized command"

Is Exchange running on your Web server? Is your website using port 25?

I went back to the top of the thread and saw you are using AMTP. I didn't know anything about this proposed protocol until I Googled it just now. The draft says that it purposely uses a different TCP port. What are you configuring to try to get Exchange to accept the forwarded mail?

I've searched a little more about AMTP, and have discovered the following: The IETF considers this proposal to have expired. I have not found any new developments since the draft dated April 2004. For those readers not familiar (as I was not), AMTP stands for Authenticated Mail Transfer Protocol. My next question is, what Authentication has been configured between your two systems? What is the reason you are using AMTP?

my webiste is running on a Linux server managed by ace-net on the domain rapid-pc-rescue.com which is registered with internic the exchange is running on a windows server 2003 enterprise edition on rapid-pc-rescue.local which is my local domain and it is not registered with internic if that helps....

Forgive me if you've already provided this information further up the thread... I'm glad AMTP was a typo and not your actual environment. As I understand it, the MX record for rapid-pc-rescue.com points to a server hosted by someone else. That server is supposed to then forward mail to your Exchange server. It sounds like the only domain your Exchange server is hosting is .local. Questions: Can you successfully send mail via telnet commands from the Linux server to your Exchange server? Does your Exchange server have a public IP address?

My Exchange Server does not have a public ip, That is the problem i do not know how to set it up so that like Berry Gerber says the world sees my exchange server. In addition i believe that i can use my ISP's dns server insted of setting one up on my domain controller... Thanks for the previous posts, I'm real sorry about the typo...
