Your Exchange server doesn't have to have a *public* IP address, but it does need to be routable from the server acting as your mail gateway. This could be done with a point-to-point VPN tunnel. It would probably help to give a few details of your network topology between the host and your Exchange server.

I can provide any informatin you would like, Basically my network topology is like this, sbc modem->belkin router->Exchange Server /\ File Server Domain server belkin router has DHCP enabled mostly because i have a laptop that does not want to join my domain and therefore i can not set it up as of now to connect to the internet if i was to disaple DHCP... Also the router has the automatic dns provided by my ISP, But i also have both dns and dhcp setup on my domain controller and all internal computers point to the domain server including the Exchange Server.. The way i connect to mail.rapid-pc-rescue.com is through an SMTP Connector.... mail.rapid-pc-rescue.com is running on a linux server on the domain rapid-pc-rescue.com If that helps if you need more information please ask... THank You

Correct me if I've confused the situation. Is there any way for the server at mail.rapid-pc-rescue.com to initiate a connection (even a ping) to your Exchange server? It looks like your systems are in your private network, but those addresses are not routable. In other words, I cannot ping 192.168.x.x from my workstation and get a response from your systems unless I make some other networking provision.

Establishing a VPN connection requires cooperating pieces on both sides. Talk to your hosting company to see if they have a recommended solution.

Find out if they offer mail forwarding services, and if they do what is required.

Okej this is what they said, If you wish all mail duties for your domain to be delegated to a different mail server, you definitely can do so. You will need to have the FQDN of the mail server (Fully Qualified Domain Name). examples: mx.mydomain.com mail.mydomain.com mailserver.mydomain.com mine is exchange-server.rapid-pc-rescue.local which is not avaliable to the internet....UGHH please help

I see a number of challenges in this configuration... I have a similar configuration - and these are the things I did to overcome what you are experiencing: 1. My cable ISP - like many others - blocks port 25 (and port 80) inbound, so I can't use the normal SMTP port to accept incoming mail. My Dynamic DNS provider (ChangeIP.com) provides a forwarding service, so mail is actualy sent first to their server, and then forwarded to my gateway on a different port (ie - 8025, which is not blocked by the ISP). You should go to another location - like an Internet cafe - and try to telnet to port 25 on your public address. Be sure to set up port forwarding first (see next item). If you can connect, then port 25 is not blocked. If you can't, assume that it is, and configure an alternative port on the public side and use forwarding services from your DDNS provider. 2. Since your mail server is not accessible from the Internet - it's behind a NAT device - you need to provide a mechanism for forwarding packets from your gateway to your mail server. Many routers can do this - basically it accepts traffic on a specific port on the public side, and forwards it to a static address on the private side. If your ISP blocks port 25, you'll need to use an alternate port, which leads to one of two choices depending on your router's capabilities. If your router can listen on port 8025/Public and forward to port 25/Private, no changes on the exchange server are needed. If your router can only forward to like-ports, then you'll need to set up forwarding on the alternate port AND configure Exchange to listen on that port as well. Note that use of port "8025" is just an example - you can use any available port, preferrably above 2048. I use a Microsoft ISA firewall server connected directly to the cable modem - no router on the internet side. This allows me to "publish" services - the firewall listens on specific ports and forwards the packets to alternate ports on specific devices on the private network. There are Linux based firewalls that can do similar things for much less cost. Until you can confirm that port 25 is open inbound, and you have the ability to forward inbound packets through your router to the Exchange server, I doubt you'll be able to proceed. Hope this gets you moving in the right direction. Glenn

I Ran SmtpDiag and here are the results: C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator.RAPID-PC-RESCUE\Desktop\SMTPDiag\SmtpDia g>smtpdiag "support@rapid-pc-rescue.com" "tech@rapid-pc-rescue.com" Searching for Exchange external DNS settings. Computer name is EXCHANGE-SERVER. VSI 1 has the following external DNS servers: There are no external DNS servers configured. Checking SOA for rapid-pc-rescue.com. Checking external DNS servers. Checking internal DNS servers. SOA serial number match: Passed. Checking local domain records. Checking MX records using TCP: rapid-pc-rescue.com. Checking MX records using UDP: rapid-pc-rescue.com. Both TCP and UDP queries succeeded. Local DNS test passed. Checking remote domain records. Checking MX records using TCP: rapid-pc-rescue.com. Checking MX records using UDP: rapid-pc-rescue.com. Both TCP and UDP queries succeeded. Remote DNS test passed. Checking MX servers listed for tech@rapid-pc-rescue.com. Connecting to mail.rapid-pc-rescue.com [209.51.149.250] on port 25. Successfully connected to mail.rapid-pc-rescue.com. Connecting to exchange-server.rapid-pc-rescue.local [192.168.2.6] on port 25. Error: Expected "250". Server rejected the sender address. Failed to submit mail to exchange-server.rapid-pc-rescue.local. I did it again here: C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator.RAPID-PC-RESCUE\Desktop\SMTPDiag\SmtpDia g>smtpdiag "support@rapid-pc-rescue.com" "tech@rapid-pc-rescue.com" Searching for Exchange external DNS settings. Computer name is EXCHANGE-SERVER. VSI 1 has the following external DNS servers: There are no external DNS servers configured. Checking SOA for rapid-pc-rescue.com. Checking external DNS servers. Checking internal DNS servers. SOA serial number match: Passed. Checking local domain records. Checking MX records using TCP: rapid-pc-rescue.com. Checking MX records using UDP: rapid-pc-rescue.com. Both TCP and UDP queries succeeded. Local DNS test passed. Checking remote domain records. Checking MX records using TCP: rapid-pc-rescue.com. Checking MX records using UDP: rapid-pc-rescue.com. Both TCP and UDP queries succeeded. Remote DNS test passed. Checking MX servers listed for tech@rapid-pc-rescue.com. Connecting to mail.rapid-pc-rescue.com [209.51.149.250] on port 25. Successfully connected to mail.rapid-pc-rescue.com. Connecting to exchange-server.rapid-pc-rescue.local [192.168.2.6] on port 25. Error: Expected "250". Server rejected the sender address. Failed to submit mail to exchange-server.rapid-pc-rescue.local. I hope that this would help, Support@rapid-pc-rescue.com is created on both my exchange server and mail.rapid-pc-rescue.com however tech is not created on my exchange server but it is on the mail.rapid-pc-rescue.com server and i use that email by logging onto the other server with outlook from my laptop and using it as an IMAP connection...

Sorry - I've been spread a little thin lately. For Email you only need port 25 open. What are you trying to configure DNS to do? Typically you need to point to an external DNS server so that your Exchange server can resolve other domains in an attempt to send messages out. For inbound, are you able to Telnet via port 25 to what you think your MX record points to (either by name or by IP address)?

I was wondering if i could disable it and use the dns and dhcp provided by my router, I have a belkin wireless router... I have not tried telnet from outside: what would i telnet EX: (rakovice.dyndns.org 25) ?

I attempted to telnet to that address, and get the error: 454 5.7.3 Client does not have permission to submit mail to this server. This happens after I attempt to issue the Mail From: command. In your Default SMTP Virtual Server Properties, on the Access tab, go to Authentication. Do you have Anonymous access disabled (unchecked)?
