I am trying to install Exchange 2007 on a 64-bit (x64) Windows 2003 R2 server, installing into an existing test Domain that contains an Exchange 2003 Server. When I opened the setup file, the first item listed was to install the .NET framework. I downloaded and installed the 64-bit .NET 2.0, and that item became greyed out on the Exchange 2007 Install checklist. I then went into the installation wizard by clicking "Step 4: Install Microsoft Exchange". When this wizard opened, I selected the location and selected the existing Exchange 2003 server for this new server to connect to. The wizard then performed Readiness Checks. It found that there was a new best practices configuration file available, but it was unable to download it and used the its existing configuration file. When it then checked for prerequisites, it gave me an error that ASP.NET was not installed on this server. However, I had just installed the .NET 2.0 Framework which contains ASP.NET. There was a link to a Recommended Action, but that link was invalid. All I received from that was a Microsoft web page telling me that there is no Microsoft.com web page that matches my entry. Does anyone know why the installation wizard is telling me I need ASP.NET when I just installed it? Thank you very much for your help.

It's correct that you cannot in-place upgrade Exchange 2003 servers to Exchange 2007, but it's supported to install Exchange 2007 into an existing Exchange 2003 organization and then transition to Exchange 2007. Regarding the ASP.NET issue I had a similar problem on a 64-bit server, the solution was to install the .NET Framework 2.0 tools via the Windows Add/Remove Component menu.

Thank you for your response. I tried uninstalling the Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 from the server and reinstalling it via Add/Remove Programs. However, I am still having the same problem. I am still seeing that the installation process is finding that there ia an updated best practices configuration file and tries to download it. However, it is evidently unavailable because the Exchange 2007 Setup utility is unable to download it and goes ahead and uses its existing configuration file. Also, there is a link to a "Recommended Action" for ASP.NET, but that links to a page that does not exist. The other oddity I see is that when I start the Exchange 2007 setup, the first screen has a list of things to do. The first thing listed is to install .NET 2.0. That is greyed out, indication that it is already installed. When I click on the fourth item, Install Exchange, the Exchange 2007 installation starts and I get the problems I have described at that point. Any insight would be graetly appreciated.

I contacted Microsoft about this problem. They found that it was a known issue, and they incorporated the correction for this issue into an updated Best Practices configuration file. This is downloaded automatically when installing Exchange 2007. When I tried installing Exchange 2007 again, it no longer exhibited this particular problem.
