pakeon -> Exchange 2000 disaster recovery (7.Nov.2006 6:04:55 AM)

Hello,

I would like to test the Exchange 2000 disaster recovery procedure. I installed a W2K and configured as GC, then I moved it from office network to the lab lan. I followed the KB to start the Exchange setup with /disasterrecovery switch (setup.exe /disasterrecovery) then the setup prompts up saying initializing, then the setup runs infinitely.

I wonder what can I do? I just want to test whether all mailboxes can be restored and open successfully.

Any help?

Many thanks,
Pakeon

That's odd, from my understanding you built a test Exchange\DC box and trying to run \disasterrecovery switch? Can you explain setup prompts up saying initializing, then the setup runs infinitely. What part is running infinitely, what stage?

Hi JChong,

Thanks for your reply!

The setup was hung in the very beginning stage, as a normal setup running but no more dialoges prompted.

Anyhow, I gave up and I installed the exchange 2000 under same site.

Afterwards, I restored an online IS backup copy to the second server and mounted the mailbox store. It works.

Now I have problem:
I was asked to open certain mailboxes to review the messages, so that I created a normal user account, ran cleanup agaent on the mailbox store on second server, selected the desired mailbox and clicked Reconnect to connect the mailbox to the newly created account. It did not work at all because the mailbox is already associated with an existing user.

I cannot change user's password to log into the mailbox. I wonder whether there are some ways out there I can open the mailbox?

Any advice?

Thanks in advance.
Pakeon

You created this restore server in the same production domain?

Yes, I did.

Are you still having the issue to reassociate a mb? You normally want to create restore servers in a different forest\domain.

I am able to reconnect to mailbox and retrieve messages now.

I am now setting up a recovery server on different forest/domain.

Great what did you fix? If you need some documentation on how to build recovery server in diff forest in case,

The problem is due to mismatched code pages. Besides the default code pages, I added two more: tranditional chinese and simplified chinese. Then problem is gone.
