I have two Exchange servers in the same domain.  Do I need a Recipient Update Service for each server?  I.e. RUS for Server A and RUS for Server B

Still having replication issues....

Thanks

You do not need one for each server. What replication issues?

I have a new exchange server that CAN send email and replicate it's folders to the old one, however the Old server is unable to replicate its folders or send email to the new server.

I have removed the smarthost from the smtp virtual server.  Currently I'm using DNS to route all messages.  Before I was using the smarthost in the routing connector but removed it to troubleshoot the public folder replication. (the old server send and receives email just fine from the Internet).

Additionally, I can send email out to the Internet from the new server but any email from the Internet to the new server does not get routed to it.  The only reason I want the replication to work is so that the Public Folders on the old machine get copied to the new one.  i then want to gradually move mailboxes over to the new server.  Once everyone is moved over I will decommision the old exchange server.

Are they in the same routing group? From your old server can you telnet to port 25 on the new server? If so try to send mail over telnet.

From old server.

1. Open command prompt.
2. type set localecho
3. open ipofnewserver 25
4. helo
5. mail from:useratoldserver@yourdomain.com (hit enter)
6. rcpt to:useratnewserver@yourdomain.com (hit enter)
7. data
8. . (these are periods then hit enter)
9. . (these are periods then hit enter)

Does it say message queued for delivery and the user at new server receive?

When I try to telnet from the old to new I get "connection to host lost"

I took the smarthost out however almost seems like the old server is trying to route the email outside???

Do you get this "connection to host lost"  right away or after a few seconds? Is there any firewall mechanism between the two or running locally ipsec, windows firewall etc?

I wanted to get back with you and thank you for your help.  Everything seems to be working now but how it was fixed is a slight mystery to me.  What I did was add a new (additional) SMTP virtual  server to the NEW exchange box.  i left the default SMTP virtual server in place.  Once I did that the public Folders and email started to flow within 5 minutes.

My question is this.  Do i need a separate SMTP virtual server for each Xchange server or was the SMTP connector just corrupted on the new machine?

Thanks again.

It seems to me that your default smtp virtual server (orginal one) is misconfigured. My guess is it could be it's not listening on port 25, or it's got some acl restrictions. I'm pretty sure, if you had deleted your original smtp virtual server and recreated it it would have worked since it would use the default settings again.
