We have a single domain with one Exchange 2003 server setup and running in production. We want to add a second server in the same domain and place it offsite at a disaster recovery site. We have reviewed the MS KB's on Exchange disaster recovery and restoring and setting up using the /disasterrecovry switch but are trying to get a jumpstart on the process if its ever needed. Is it possible to setup the dr server with duplicate user mailboxes from the production server? What impact would that have on mail delivery from the production server to the end users? Is it possible for a user to have two mailboxes on two different info stores? Keep in mind only one would be live the other would be sitting idle. Thanks in advance.

Nothing native with 2003. Here are some options.

1. You can create a server in a DR site, add it as second ex server with no mbs. Then if your primary ex crashes, you can re-home the user's mb to this new server. They will of course have nothing, but at least mail function will resume. Then you build your original server and restore. Or you can restore the database to this new server. (Might have to clean a few things up after)

2. Buy third party Exchange synchronization software that will do what you're looking for.
