Smallguy -> hosting multiple email domains (20.Nov.2006 4:04:30 PM)

Hi everyone we are in the process of moving our data from one exchange server to another...I've followed an article from MSExchange.org

http://www.msexchange.org/tutorials/Migrating-Exchange2000-Exchange-2003-Hardware.html

and I'm at the poiint of migratin the data

my question is this we has 3 different email domains in my company the primary is abc.com and the other 2 are dfe.com and zyx.com

when I installed exchange 2003 it automatically created a recipient policy ( I also read http://www.msexchange.org/tutorials/MF010.html and http://www.petri.co.il/configure_exchange_2000_2003_to_receive_email_for_other_domains.htm )

with all 3 domains but it also copied the connetctors we had from 2000....I was told we do not need the connectors anymore with exchange enterprise (we had exchange 2000 standard before)

I want to make sure that this information is accurate before removing the old connectors and moving on.

What do you mean copied your connectors? Connectors are part of your Exchange routing toplogy. If the connectors were being used when you were on 2000, then more than likley you will need them when to be re-homed to your 2003 server before you decomission it.

I guess my question is Do I still need the connectors (after the mirgratipn is complete) in exchange 2003 enterprise....my boss said the reason he bought exchange 2k3 enterprise was because we could eliminate the connectors. He did all the research and then asked me to implement it(obviosly I'm and exchange newbie_....will the conectors still be there afterI perform http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307917 and was my boss possialby mislead.

If the connectors are being used now, more then likely you will need them unless you have different plans. Take a look at your current connectors, are you talking about routing group connectors, smtp connectors and what are they doing and how are they configured?

They are SMTP connectors. that are configured to send emails for the users for have different email addresses than our default domain.

you said unless I have different plans

what kind of different palns  could allow me to remove these connectors while still using  one server for  3 email domains

Usually you you create smtp connectors because you have some sort of different policy you want to implement for routing. In your case you might be doing some policy based routing for each domain, I'm not sure. If you don't want to use the connectors you can just delete them or not re-home them and your smtp virtual server will just send out to the internet using DNS. Sorry I can't help you out more because I don't know the purpose of why those connectors were configured in the first place.

Thank you for the help so far it's been enlightening...In all honesty I've looked at the connectors and can't see anything that is configured for policies. I think they were put in because sometihng wasn't worknig orginally....and it was the band-aid fix at the time. The person here before me was even more green.

I looked through the conectors several times and there were no special congigs I could see.

but what puzzles me is theere is no default connector which form what I thought I understood should always be there.

Yeah you may not need them, just record the settings just in case and you can delete them. They only take a minute or so to recreate.

am I wrong to think that there should be atleast a defualt SMtP connector??

because when I go ot the connectors foler there is one  for each of the 2 secondary email domains but not one for the primary email domain.

ie
there is a connector for def.com and ghi.com but not for  ABC.com (the primary email domain) and there is no connect called Default.

By default Exchange has no connectors it uses the SMTP virtual server. So any connectors you seen were manually created.
