I know there is an event sync for SMTP to add a disclaimer but I was reading where that doesn't work when you connect via Outlook because of MAPI. Is there any way to add a legal disclaimer so it will work with Outlook? I know there is software out there to buy but I have a very low budget and I don't feel it is worth the money they are asking. Any input is greatly appreciated!

Yes you are correct because these are by nature "SMTP" transport event sinks and only fired when sent through SMTP and not MAPI. You can circumvent this by building a second exchange server that you will use as your smarthost or in other words for all outboun emails and implement the event sink on this box. Also look into other products such as GFI or xclaimer. http://www.msexchange.org/software/Disclaimers/

I've looked at most of them and one that is reasonably priced is the "QS Disclaimer" by PA-Software (http://www.pa-software.com/products/overview.php?prod=49742CC0) It still says it utilizes SMTP .. so does this mean I would still need a third exchange server to act as a smart host? I already have a FE/BE setup.

Does all your outbound mail go out your FE? If so you can use the event sink by registering it on your FE.

That's a good question :) .. i'm still very new with Exchange and kind of learning as I go here. I followed all the directions to setup a FE/BE setup but I honestly don't know if the mail goes through the FE. I have RPC setup between the two and I can send/receive internal mail as well as external mail so I would assume it is all going through the FE box.

Do you have any smtp connectors? Go to ESM, routing groups, connectors.

Your options is to either, 1. Buy third party disclaimers which provide disclaimers to MAPI sessions as well as SMTP 2. Create a route smtp connector for all external email to go out your FE. Then register the free sink on your FE.

I setup the connector. Is there a way I can tell if everything is being routed through the FE server? I'm not sure if it is happening. I setup the sync for the disclaimer on the FE but it still is not working.

Send an email to your hotmail account or any third party account and check the headers, or you can check the smtp logs on your FE. James Chong

I checked the header and it is coming from the back end. There aren't any logs at all for the front end regarding SMTP events so nothing is being pushed to it. maybe i setup the connector wrong. My settings (all defaults remain): - Use DNS to route - Local bridgehead is the front end server - address space type: SMTP address: abc.com cost: 1 - Connector scope: Entire organization I didn't touch the front end or back end SMTP settings.

Create an smtp connector on the BE with these settings. Use smarthost to route [ipofyourFE] (include the brackets) - Local bridgehead is your BE server - address space type: SMTP address: * cost: 1 - Connector scope: Entire organization Restart your routing service and smtp service. This says my backend server ie local bridgehead will send all external internet mail * to the ip of your FE.

It tells me I don't have permission to send to the external email address I tried. I'm assuming that means there are relay restrictions. There was a check box in the connector to allow relay .. should I enable that? I get nervous messing with relay settings because I don't want an open relay or any type of weakend security.

With default settings, your BE should be able to relay through your FE. If configurations have changed this may not be the case. You can circumvent this by going to your FE's smtp virtual server properties and adding your BE to relay. >There was a check box in the connector to allow relay . Don't do this.

Hmm that wouldn't make sense if it's using the connector. So you get the permission error and the queue issue?

Well I feel stupid .. i figured out why it was giving that error .. i followed some directions to help secure the server and changed the dns settings. I fixed that however now the message goes into a "messages queued for deferred deliver" which I guess is better then failing. is there any way to make them send imediatly?

Were you able to fix the relay issue or allow the BE to relay through the frontend? If so did you restart your routing and smtp service on both the BE and FE?
