Oh of course, i'm forgetting. Exchange (unlike AD and a few other things that gave me hell during the rebuild I mentioned earlier) don't need to be on a server box!

Thanks for the reminder...

Yeah, if you can restore your ntbackup to another test exchange server and get those database files edb + stm, then you can just copy them and mount them to your production ex server. But this time, I would try to build this test box exactly as the first one meaning same domain name and all that so we can at least get the restore to work and get those db files.

Same domain might be hard, all our workstations are connected to the KINGJ.NET domain and the only server is the DC. The domain was previously JARR.LOCAL

Yeah dont' worry about it the, Exchange does not require same domain, but just wanted to eliminate this as a factor if possible. Also make sure everything is same sp and patch level.

I've been really busy recently with other project and so have only had the chance to try this out recently. On this workstation, I received errors during install, probably because I installed the system manager on here before. I'll try installing on one of our other workstations and report back.

Yes it must be server edition. Sorry for the confusion, if I mentioned workstsation, I meant workstation in terms of hardware level not sofware level.

I don't have any spare hardware lying around that I can install server on either (this really is a shoestring operation). Are you sure that there is no other way? I do still have the old EDB and STM files.

Ok, just finished reading the entire thread again. Yes databases are portable, meaning you can take them and mount them on another Exchange server.

Right, so if I mount the database on my current exchange, will it map the mailboxes to my users even though they maintain the same username but have a different unique identifier for Active Directory?

I might be able to get an old computer off a friend, coupled with the Win 2k3 30 Day activation period, I might be able to resore the database, extract, etc.

Same topic, slightly different question.

Is there any easy way to restore some to all of your exchange database quickly, without purchasing A new Exchange license. You cant really install the trial, and leave the server off, if you do, when you need it, it will have expired. I want a faster way of recovering a chunk of emails, from any date of my ntbackups, without having to reinstall exchange and do all this configuring (and troubleshooting because I know I wont get it right the first time), when the disaster strikes.

any ideas?

Thanks
Siliconvict

Yes. You can take an Exchange edb and stm file and copy them to another Exchange server and mount them. Once you mount them, run clean up agent.  Then all these mailboxes will be in red meaning their ophaned. Then you will have to create accounts for them. You can do this in bulk using mbconn.
