Does anyone have any new info on this issue? Also, is anyone else besides me still having problems with this?

We're using Exchaneg 2003 Sp2, with Symantec Mail Securtity for Exchange 5.0 and Brightmail Antispam...basically having the same problems as listed above, started on the same day everyone else started seeing the problem. A few days later Symantec "fixed" the issue in their virus def download (I never actually edited the XML files like some did, I just waited for the new download).

Anyhow, this fixed the problem for a few days, maybe a week...but then the issue came back, and has been a problem for the past couple weeks. Sometimes the services will crash several times a day, and other times it'll go a couple days without any service crashes.

Anyhow, are any of you still having problems with this, or have any advice how to fix it?

My first step in trouble shooting all of this will be to remove GFI off my mail server.  I just finished setting up a mail relay with GFI installed and I'll have my Exchange server use that box as a smart host.  Once this is done I'm just going to watch things and see what happens.

I have great news for all the users of Symantec Mail Security for Exchange that have been experiencing the IIS Admin and SMTP failures/restarts.

The problem has been fixed with the new Symantec version. One gotcha is that it has been renamed, and you could miss it on the Symantec site. Look for:

Information_Foundation_Mail_Security_for_MSE_6.0.0.177_AllWin_EN.exe
version: 6.0.0.177 size: 412,282,583 posted: 23-Mar-2007

This is the newest version that also contains support for Exchange 2007. {reason for the new name}

The Symantec tech I spoke to recommended writing down my old settings and completely removing the 5.x product before installing the new version. Here's how to do that:
To remove the Symantec Mail Security for Microsoft Exchange registry keys and folder

  • On the Windows task bar, click Start > Run.
  • In the Run dialog, in the Open text box, type regedit and then click OK.
  • In the registry editor window, in the left pane, right-click the following folder:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Symantec\SMSMSE
  • In the context-sensitive menu, click Delete.
  • Close the registry editor.
  • Delete the C:\Program Files\Symantec\SMSMSE folder from your hard drive.
If you installed Symantec Mail Security for Microsoft Exchange to a different folder, remove that folder.
    Hope this helps!

    Hi there,

We have the same problem right now and it looks like an issue in GFI Mail Essentials 12 on Exchange 2k3 SP2 (on w2k3 sp2).

When i send an email (with an anonymous Email tool) with the following "from address" (copied from a SP*M mail)

    ervan@wsj.comns.wsj.com206.157.192.15ns2.wsj.com206.157.192.16ns2.dowjones.com208.144.114.6ns6.dowjones.com63.240.101.1 <robin@neste.com>

    , our services crash ... IIS / SMTP / POP3 / ROUTING ... D.E.P. Closed WWW blablabla

When i disable the GFI Services, the mail just arrives in my mailbox without the services being killed ...

I've placed a support call with GFI, when i have a reply, i'll post it on this forum.

    Thank you.
