We are currently running Exchange 2000 in mixed mode on a Windows 2000 domain after upgrading from Exchange 5.5 a few years back. We just bought a new server and plan to migrate the mailboxes from 2000 to the 2003 server. From what I understand, we need to convert our current exchange server to native mode before doing the migration.

Essentially I have 2 questions.

1) Is this necessary to change to native mode, or is it a best practice?

2) The "Change mode" button is grayed out. The research I've done says that I need to remove the ADC's for cc mail, MS mail, instant messaging, etc. I did that, rebooted the server and the option is still grayed out. Suggestions?

Thanks - Tom

It's best practice and since you have no more 5.5 requirement you should certainly do it.
As for your problem, see: http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en&q=switch+exchange+native+mode&meta= as there is more to do than what you have done so far.

Switching to Native does give you benefits as well as being a best practice. The link provided also gives you a Benefits article as well as a How To article.

I realize that there are more steps involved, such as the forestprep and domain prep and all that, but the issue is that the Change mode button is still grayed out. I haven't been able to find anything that specifically states why this is happening.
