I am having problems connecting from a client computer to the exchange server. When I disable the firewall in XP Pro I can connect to the shared folders and email no problem. I have tried adding emsmta.exe, exmgmt.exe, mad.exe and srsmain.exe and the network path to the Programs and Services exceptions in the Firewall settings on the client computer but it makes no difference. I have also tried setting up connecting to the Exchange mailboxes using http to get round the firewall problem which also doesn't work. The form of the principle name for the proxy server is msstd: then my proxy server name. When I open outlook using this it asks for the login name and password which seems to suggest it is connecting to the server although it still spends ages hunting and then eventually shows disconnected. As an aside when I start up a manual dial up VPN when the firewall is turned on this causes outlook to connect to the exchange server ok. Thanks :)

Try using a 3rd party firewall like Sygate - this will tell you which programs are trying to connect and what they are connecting to. Armed with this info you should be able to resolve the problem.
