Bernd -> Upgrade from Beta 2 to final (28.Dec.2006 5:38:08 AM)

We now have tested Exchange 2007 Beta2 x64 for nearly half a year and now plan to upgrade to the final Version.

We got the final Version from MSDN which seems to be an universal install (Standard + Enterprise / x86 + x64) and is about 5,5 GB large (because of 4 GB UM-Language-Files).

When I try to update our Server we get the Error-Message "Setup-Error" from setup.exe. Nothing more. No log or a detailed problem as e.g. "Upgrade not supported".

The only thing  I could find is the dw.log with the Error

NEW LOG
11:32:40  12-28-2006
ship dw20.exe 11.0.6555.0
Exception Mo

Has anybody managed it to upgrade from the Beta to the Final of Exchange 2007 ?

I know that it is better to setup a new "clean" system and that upgrading from a beta is offically not supported, but for me it makes sense, so it would be very usefull to get any hints.

Thanks

Inplace upgrades of Beta2 is not supported, and it does not work either. I think you can upgrade the mailbox role, but all the other roles needs to be reinstalled...

It does indeed work! But it's correct it's not supported...

@Midholm
As I wrote, I knew that it is not supported but this doesn't have to mean that it won't work !!

Upgrading from Vista Beta/RC to Final was also not supported but did work either !!

Thanks for this information !!!

How did You manage it. Did You have any problems or Errors ?

First of all I had to uninstall the CommanShell 1.0 before it was possible to installe the new Powershell.  Did You do that too ?

Ping me offline and I'll be happy to sent you the doc describing this.

Bernd -> RE: Upgrade from Beta 2 to final (29.Dec.2006 10:00:48 PM)

Thanks a lot to Hendrik [;)], without his help and upgrade guideness there would have been no chance to realize the upgrade. But also this helped a lot, there were still a lot of problems to manage. Totally it took about 10 hours (!!!!) for the upgrade until all problems were solved. If anyone else want to go that way, here are some hints:

1 ) We had some problems with the UM-Server at B2. It wasn't possible to install the UM correctly. Before installing the Update we had to remove some registry keys and the ExchangeUm-User manually, also the setup believes, UM wasn't installed

2 ) There were a lot of troubles with the old CommandShell and the new PowerShell. Finally we solved this problems by having both installed
simultaneously during the installation (First You have to install the old shell, but it is possible to install it again after installing the new shell)

3 ) The uninstall of the Client Access didn't really work correctly. After some trials we had to change a Value in the AD manually to tell the setup, that it wasn't installed any longer.

4 ) We had to apply additional Patches for Framework 2.0 + the Server that didn't come with the usual updates

Without this problems it would have been an easy way and finished in less than an hour.

a ) Uninstalling UMS + CAS (and it's settings)
b ) Installing the new PowerShell
c ) Upgrading Schema + AD + Domain
d ) Upgrading Hub + Mailbos Server
e ) Reinstalling UM + ClientAccess-Server

Unfortunately it wasn't so easy for us.

Thanks again Henrik for Your great and fast support.

I hope it everything works now. But it's 4 a.m.in Europe now, so testing have to wait a few hours

SilverICE -> RE: Upgrade from Beta 2 to final (12.Jan.2007 11:52:01 AM)

Where do you download just the new Powershell version?  also, what version is the new version?

Henrik Walther -> RE: Upgrade from Beta 2 to final (12.Jan.2007 2:14:12 PM)

The newest version is Windows PowerShell 1.0, which can be downloaded via the respective links in below MS KB article:

inspectorgadjet -> RE: Upgrade from Beta 2 to final (9.Feb.2007 11:30:40 AM)

I'd like a little more advice if possible about upgrading from the beta. I've got a small server running on beta 2 which a few of my friends and I have been messing with. I'd like to upgrade to the final version if possible and just need a few tips on upgrading the hub and mailbox roles.

inspectorgadjet -> RE: Upgrade from Beta 2 to final (9.Feb.2007 11:53:05 AM)

Aha! I figured it out and the upgrade is busy happening now.

inspectorgadjet -> RE: Upgrade from Beta 2 to final (13.Feb.2007 5:28:27 AM)

Well the upgrade did happen...and mostly smoothly. I had a few bumps along the way, but it's all finished now.
I have one last problem though, upgrading to the final version from the beta has done something odd. I can only access mail through owa. Connecting through outlook or my pda no longer works. Any ideas what could have happened?

Henrik Walther -> RE: Upgrade from Beta 2 to final (15.Feb.2007 3:01:50 PM)

Outlook Anywhere from the Internet? Or simply Outlook on the internal network?

What error message/code to you get on your mobile device?

DaveVVV -> RE: Upgrade from Beta 2 to final (27.Feb.2007 7:39:21 PM)

Need help.  I am trying to upgrade from Beta2 to final.  I am using a version of Standard Exchange 2007 I downloaded off MS Eopen to an ISO file then placed on a CD.  I uninstalled CA and then MONAD, then I installed Powershell, then I ran setup.exe /prearead I get the following message "\forefront\DVD_Forefront_introl.html" and nothing happens.  I placed the ISO on the drive and used WinRAR to extract and ran the setup.exe /preparead again and the samething happend.  If I just run setup.exe nothing happens.

Help.

Thanks
David

Henrik Walther -> RE: Upgrade from Beta 2 to final (28.Feb.2007 4:17:20 AM)

Please note an in-place upgrade from a beta version to RTM isn't supported by MS, unless you were a participant in the Exchange 2007 TAP or RDP.

When that's said it sounds like that media is screwed up, so you might want to download a new ISO then perhaps mount it using Daemon-tools or another ISO tool.

DaveVVV -> RE: Upgrade from Beta 2 to final (28.Feb.2007 9:30:14 AM)

You were right, re-downloaded and it was fine.
Thanks!
Look forward to reading your book

Dave
