You enable FBA on the Exchange Virtual Server in Exchange System Manager, and then go into IIS Manager, and require SSL on the Exchange Virtual Directory. Then (after waiting a few minutes) you should see a blue login page (which comes as standard) instead of the grey popup. You also then have to use an https:// URL.

Ok I have FBA enabled in System Manager and I just re-enabled SSL in IIS. Now in a few minutes I'm going to try to do https://servername and see what happens.

I've enabled FBA and require SSL. When I type https://servername I get page cannot be displayed and when I type https://serverIP I get page cannot be displayed. I have a couple of questions... So I don't need to have a certificate installed to enable SSL and use the web based/FBA login? I haven't installed the certificate yet because we arent' sure how we want to go about that part... And also when you just install a fresh copy of exchange(OWA is installed and enabled by default as far as I know) then you enable FBA and SSL, that's all that's required to get the default blue website to login to, to check your mail instead of the login popup? Any idea what html file is being used for that and where it's located on the servers hd?

You do need SSL to use FBA properly. If you have no cert installed, then that would explain the problem. There is a way to use it without SSL, but it's insecure, since the credentials are passed from the form unencrypted: http://www.petri.co.il/using_fba_without_ssl.htm The actual form is: C:\Program Files\Exchsrvr\exchweb\bin\auth\usa\logon.asp

I tried that workaround just so I can test this thing and now it gives me a 'page is under construction' page when I type http://servername or IP.... Anyone know what's going on here?

That is the default web page for the default web site. How about if you go to http://servername/exchange ?

When I go to http://servername/exchange I get the popup box instead of the splash screen. Is there a step that I am missing?

Have a look at the Exchange VDir in IIS Manager, and make sure that only Basic Auth is enabled. ESM should take care of this setting, but it sometimes fails. Also, look at the ExchWeb VDir, and make sure that Anonymous Access is enabled.

In the Exchange vdir, only basic is checked and in exchangeweb vdir only anon is checked.

When it shows the login popup, and you login, does it then show you the FBA login form? Or do you see the mailbox, or maybe an error?

I'm baffled. Everything seems to be in order, by the sound of things. If this is on Win 2003 server (i.e. IIS6), then it might help to delete the Exchange VDir in IIS Manager, and then use this to re-create it (method 3 is easiest): http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=883380

Thanks for the article I'll give that a try either tonight or tomorrow... Probably tonight as I don't want to interupt email during the business day. Thanks for all the help... Will you be around tomorrow so I can tell ya what happened after I recreate the vidr's?
