Do both servers in CCR have to be in the same subnet in order to set up CCR in 2 different physical sites? they call is streching subnets If that is the case could someone explain to me how you have the same subnet in 2 different location. Can someone point me to some documentation to so this? I can see how you can do this unless you have layer 2 connectivity between 2 sites.

Yes when speaking Exchange 2007 on Windows 2003 Servers, this is required. But when Longhorn server is released (and when Exchange 2007 supports Longhorn Server), the two nodes in the CCR don't have to be on the same subnet. I have 2 locations, Toronto and Calgary. I would like to have one of the nodes in toronto and the second node in calgary and they will be connected using VLANs to allow them to have the same subnet. The link between the 2 locations is 10Mbps though and is used for day to day data transfer and will be exchange log shipping. Will this be sufficient? Is this even do-able?? I have read alot of the MS documentation and they do not specify what is the minimum bandwidth required and nothing that talks about having the nodes in different cities. Also, with CCR is it possible to schedule when the log files can be replicated from active to passive node? Thanks in Advance

I don't know the formula to use for this, so I've asked my sources at MS. Unfortunately you cannot schedule the log file shipping functionalit, only suspend it.

Thanks Henrik, hopefully your source at MS will shed some light on this issue because from what im reading online, some people say it having the 2 nodes in different cities can be done but it will not be supported by MS and some other people say that it cannot be done at all, even with a high bandwidth between the sites. Knowing from MS will definitely help out with this. Thanks again. Looking forward to your reply.

Well placing the active and passive nodes in a CCR i at two different locations is definitely supported as well as realistic (I know MS IT uses this scenario). What could is an CCR with both nodes and databases copies at the same location, if the building burns down? Here's the reply I got from Scott Schnoll (Cluster guru and Technical writer at the Exchange UE team). What we’re using now is as follows: Total Bandwidth Required = Bandwidth For Log Data + Bandwidth For File Notifications + Bandwidth For DC Traffic + Bandwidth For MAPI Access + Bandwidth For Mapi.NET Access + Bandwidth For Heartbeat + Bandwidth For Cluster DB Updates Also keep in mind that after introducing Exchange 2007, if you are using most or all of the new features, you will also see an increase in AD traffic, so that also needs to be factored in.
