I have a similar issue.
We have all the latest fixes from microsoft installed.
The PF usage over the last few weeks has gone mad, it increases fast, never goes down and keep increasing until the server decides it can't take it.
The more virtual memory we allocate, the more it will increase.
We are a small site (school) and our server only has 4gig of physical memory, I asked our reseller if the amount of RAM had been underestimated and, after investigation, he pointed at this forum saying it was a known issue with Exchange 2007.
I have two questions:
- If Microsoft is reading this forum... what kind of logs/information do you need to help investigate the issue?
- To you all... For a school with 1000 students and 100 members of staff, how much RAM would you recommend for exchange 2007?

See http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa996719.aspx for requirments including memory.

Thanks for the quick reply.
Looking at these specs, it seems I am ok, but, then again, following any Microsoft recommended specs is always a risky move: you usually need a lot more to make their products run smoothly.
Anyway, it seems I am back to square one, lack of memory doesn't seem to be the issue, it's just Outlook not managing memory properly... unless anyone disagrees.

The memory spec is 2 gigs for the OS and then 5 megs per mailbox. You said there were 1000 users. So per the spec you would need 7 gigs minimum. Here is a forum thread on supporting 1000 users.

I guess you mean 2GB for the Mailbox Server role. Also bear in mind that 5MB is when you're dealing with heavy users. If you have light to medium users in the org you are fine with 3MBs per user mailbox.

This is the spec from the ms article. Either way his server has 4 gigs of memory which seems kind of skinny for 1000 users.

  • Minimum: 2 gigabytes (GB) of RAM
  • Recommended: 2 GB of RAM per server plus 5 megabytes (MB) of RAM per mailbox
  • Minimum based on number of storage groups, see

This is from the Planning Memory Configurations section in the E2K7 documentation:
    Mailbox server memory recommendations

    User type
    Mailbox server memory recommendation

    Light

2 GB plus 2 MB per mailbox

    Average

2 GB plus 3.5 MB per mailbox

    Heavy

2 GB plus 5 MB per mailbox

If you have light to medium users and only the MB role is installed on this particular server, then you should have enough memory. If you have heavy users and this is a multi-role Exchange 2007 server, then you need a little more memory. Beain in mind though that it's typically not necessary to use more than 8GB on an Exchange 2007 multi-role server (doesn't ).

BTW did you remember to apply the CLR .NET hotfix?

Can you all specify your server's specs when posting?

    My server specs:
-Two dual-core Xeon processors (Each core is 3GHz)
    -4GB
-Single RAID controller with dual ports
    Disk1 & Disk2 - RAID 1 (OS)
    Disk 3 & Disk 4 - RAID 1 (Only transaction logs)
    Disk 5 & Disk 6 & Disk 7 - RAID 5 (Exchange Database)
    Disk 8 - Global Hotspare
    -Windows 2003 x64 R2 SP2
    -Exchange 2007 SP1
-Only Hub Transport, Client Access, Mailbox roles on this server.  Single AD forest, Single AD site and Single AD domain
    -100 Mailboxes (moderate activity)
-Backup Exec 11d exchange remote agent

I will be migrating to Exchange 2007 SP1 from Exchange 2003 SP2 next week.  My new server's specs are shown above.  I am hoping I don't have to deal with this issue.

Wow. I thought I would come and check on this thread because when I applied SP1, my sluggishness of my system has stopped. Granted, the memory is still insanely high, but at least I can use the server quicker. I would have to sit and wait for things to open up before, but now things open much quicker. As for the RAM, it's weird, but we are surviving. Exchange behaves very good, and I have had only a few issues with it. The store process is still taking about 8.7GB out of my 12GB of RAM available, but as long as I can use the server, I'm happy.

We've had the same issues and have encountered problems due to an outdated driver for our Broadcom NICs and the paging file issues.   There are some great articles out there about excessive paging and even a hotfix out from Microsoft.  Check some of these links:

My test environment has 2 users on a quad core xeon with 4Gb's.
Running all 4 core modules.(64 bit licensed version, not a trial copy/WinS2003 64 bit R2 - SP1 not applied as yet, but rollup 5 applied etc)
Using an IIS SMTP server in the DMZ for connectivity

After several days, the Store BG task is consuming 2 Gb's on its own, restarting the Ecxh task resets it - I think that def. qualifies as a leak Henrik - but what details do you need to qualify this?

Well that's how the Exchange Store was designed. It should use all the memory it requires and then of course release it if other applications asks for it.

And yes even with two users...

Now what that's said there have been a .NET Framework CRL related memory issue which can be resolved by applying this HotFix:

    http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;942027

I am on the same boat as everyone who is experiencing memory issue.  I have 4GB of RAM on the server, but the store.exe process takes about 1.8 GB of it.  There is only two maiboxes each with about 800Mb of data. Here is my current usage for store.exe:

    Mem Usage: ~1.8 GB
    VM Usage: ~1.8 GB
    I/O Reads: ~2,000,000
I/O Writes: ~10,000,000 (store.exe does a lot of writes for sure)
    I/O Read Bytes: ~8,000,000,000 bytes
    I/O Write Byes: ~ 870,000,000 bytes

I have the same issue with Windows 2003 SP2 and Exchange 2003 SP2.  So it seems I can rule out Exchange 2007 as a source of this issue.  I think it has to do with either windows 2003 OS or something is not right with my exchange database.

Users frequently complain that there is a two to three seconds lag between clicking on the email and seeing it on the reading pane.

    Hey all,

I know the moderators have already said this but, I initially had the same problem that everyone else is describing. What fixed it for me was putting a seperate hdd in my exchange box and using it solely for page file. I allocated about twice what my memory amount was for paging and haven't had a problem since. Disks are cheap so, i was happy with this fix ....give it a shot.

    Cheers
