E2K on W2K to E2K7? (Full Version)

I just read Henrik's excellent article on migrating from E2K/E2K3 to E2K7 and it raised more questions for me than I expected.

Can anyone tell me if this is correct?

1. You *cannot* install E2K7 unless your domain is running E2K3 Active Directory (my Exchange 2000 Server is running Windows 2000 Server)?

If that is the case, I am planning on doing an inplace upgrade of  the Windows 2000 Server to Windows 2003 (or can I just upgrade the Schema?) but I have read that this can "Mangle" my E2K (though I do have access to E2K3)

If I can upgrade just the Schema, can I just use the 32-bit version of E2K7 to upgrade the Schema, without have to upgrade my W2K to W2K3?

Any help is *greatly* apprectiated, as killing AD is low on my list of ways to waste a weekend!!

1) The E2K7 servers needs to be W2K3 SP1 or R2. It's not problem to transition from an E2K server installed on a W2K.

2) It's supported to upgrade the schema using the 32-bit version of E2K7.

Thanks for the help....I worked on it this weekend and ran into a new problem

I was able to upgrade my schema successfully but I have to (as you said) upgrade my existing W2K/E2K server to W2K3....However, I was told during the install (before I aborted it) that Exchange 2000 is *not* compatible with W2K3 and Artcle# 321648 says that it is not supported.

So now I am worried that it will break my existing Exchange 2000 server, if I upgrade to Windows 2003....but I can't install Exchange 2007 unless I do....

Any advice?

I wanted to clarify something, after re-reading my response....

The Exchange 2007 server is running Windows Server 2003 Enterprise R2 SP1....but it can't connect to the Exchange 2000 Server because it says that my Global Catalog must be Windows 2003 and it is currently Windows 2000, which is why I need to upgrade that server but it says it will break my Exchange 2000, which is on that server.....so I am not sure what direction to go

Your E2K server running W2K doesn't need to be upgraded to W2K3, but your Global Catalog server must be a W2K3 server.

Can I make the new Exchange 2007 server the/a GC and Exchange be happy with that?  Or is it going to require it be on another server for the install....?

I ran into a new snag....the schema update killed part of our existing Avaya Voicmail functionality (now you can leave voicemail but you can't check voicemail).

We had planned on moving to the Exchange 2007 voicemail after I moved the email successfully, to get us off of the Avaya Modular Messaging but now I think we are going to be stuck upgrading the voicemail to MM 3.0 or 3.1 to work with Exchange 2003 or the AD changes that Exchange 2003 made....just to fix the voicemail in the interim before I move them to the new voicemail (sigh)

I pre-ordered your new book today because I *know* i'm gonna need it for the new voicemail features but in the meantime, I think Avaya is about to juice us for some upgrade fees (and of course they are telling me that their new 3.1 doesn't support Exchange 2007)......did I mention sigh?

Although you can install the GC and E2K7 server on the same box, I would recommend against it. If you can you should run these two roles on separate hardware.

Just so you don't get too disappointed, I must be honest and tell you there's not much UM coverage in my book (I though I would leave this for UM specific books, as it's a huge topic).

Thanks for the heads up on the book but I'm sure it will still come in very handy

As for the GC, I really meant just for the purposes of getting through the migration without having to add another DC to the mix and then afterwards, I would move the GC role (as we currently only have one DC and that is the one we are migrating Exchange from but plan to add another after the Exchange move)

The problem with putting the GC role on a E2K7 server, is it isn't supported to demote the domain controller, once you got a separate server with the GC role deployed in your organization.
