Hello All,

Many users have decreased mailbox sizes with a total 4GB reduction, but this does not reflect in the total size of the information store. How do I get the reduction to decrease the information store?

Thanks,

The physical size of the InfoStore database files never shrinks, regardless of how many messages and mailboxes are removed.  Instead, every night Exchange runs through an "online" defragmentation cycle which collects up all the white space in the file.  You get a report in the application log (event id 1221) every night indicating how much white space is available.  That number represents the amount of new messages which can be stored before the physical file grows.

The only way to reduce the physical file size is to run an offline defrag (using ESEUTIL).  It is not recommended that it be done for the sole purpose of decreasing the file size.
