Environment: Windows Server 2003 R2 with Exchange 2003 SP2
150 Windows XP SP2 Clients
All Servers and Clients have been updated with the DST patches but have not yet ran the Outlook Update Tool

Question: Could Microsoft have made this fix anymore complicated? Who is going to rely on the user to run the Outlook Update Tool correctly? I'm just curious how most admins are handling this update process. I'm trying to run the Exchange TimeZone Update tool in a test lab I have set up, but I'm having issues with Step 2 (Time Zone Extraction) http://support.microsoft.com/kb/930879 where MSEXTMZ.exe cannot extract time zone information. Does anyone have any suggestions on the most efficient way to push this update tool out to make it transparent to the user, or how to resolve the issue I'm running into on step 2?

They said there was a "known issue" with the update tool being installed in the default directory c:\program files\msextmz. Knowledge Base article 930879 says to install it in c:\msextmz and that provide a workaround for the "known issue."

Don't know if that would cause the issue you are experiencing or not...

Actually, what I found in a MS article is that the user having the timezone extraction issue needs to log onto OWA and create a meeting. This worked for me, but I can't see myself having to do this for every individual.

i added the calendar appt in OWA for the test user and it work.

now the cfg tool is telling me that it can't find Outlook but it's clearly installed.

did you still complete the msextmz.ini file before your started using the cfg tool.

this is by the far the worst piece of s/w i have ever seen developed.

The user that is logged into the workstation that will be using this tool has to have an outlook profile set up on that workstation.

looks like i got it running. needed to change the reg entry path.

at what part in the tool do i configure what mailboxes i want to run it against??

Although I'm finding that the tool will not file timezone info for any user who has never logged into OWA and set up a meeting and it places the DN paths for the user in the nonexistent.txt file. I think you can import this file and the mailboxes_1.txt into Excel (tab delimited) and copy these entries into the mailboxes_1.txt file and add the additional info.

thanks for the info.

all of my xp clients have been patched. some 2000 machines are still waiting for the patch.

i haven't installed the OS or applicaiton patch on the Exchange servers. I'm waiting to get all of this calendar update taken care of.

our users are being told to take care when booking meetings during the affected time frames.

do all users need to have logged into OWA at one time or another? we don't use OWA in production so I only have about 20 users out of 800 who have used OWA.

can this tool be run against the exchange server to see what mailboxes are conflict users or non-existant before the server get the OS and application patch?

i called MS support. you can export the data before doing OS/application DST updates.

I checked out that article at http://msexchangeteam.com/archive/2007/02/14/435267.aspx

And it was really helpfull, better then any Microsoft articles,but when setting up the path to outlook it says "outlook key does not exisit.please make sure you have outlook installed"

It's installed in fact this is a brand install windows xp and outlook 2003 and all updates.

make sure you have the right reg. path.

i think by default it's shows 12.0 but it's 11.0

or vise versa

Hopefully someone can answer this:

I was going to apply the CDO patch BEFORE running the rebasing tool against user mailboxes. Now the MS webinar I watched recommend applying the patches in the following order

OS patch
CDO patch
Run Rebasing tool

I am looking at the newly reviewed article as of 2/22/07 (KB930879) and they are now saying (under known issues) to run the rebasing tool first THEN apply the CDO patch. If you don't do it in this order they say and quote "If you install the daylight savings time updates on the Exchange server before you update mailboxes, recurring meetings that are created by OWA will not be updated by the Exchange tool. To resolve this problem, remove the DST patch , run the exchange tool again, and then reinstall the DST update on the Exchange server."

Ok...so what is it...do you go with the recommended order on the webcast or do I go with KB930879 and apply the CDO patch AFTER running the rebasing tool???

Microsoft just revised kb 930879 to version 11.1

It recommends this order:
patch server OS
run rebasing tool against mailboxes
patch exchange kb926666

If you install the daylight saving time updates on the Exchange server before you update mailboxes, recurring meetings that are created by Outlook Web Access will not be updated by the Exchange tool. To resolve this problem, remove the daylight saving time update, run the Exchange tool, and then reinstall the daylight saving time update on the Exchange server

Thanks, I notice that after I posted 12 is for office 2007 11 is for 2003
