After EHLO, type in the following: mail from: <yourSMTPaddress> rcpt to: <YourYahooAddress> data subject: Telnet test This is a test . quit Note that there is a blank line after "subject", and after the body of the message ("This is a test"). After that there is a period by itself on a line signalling the end of the message body. The "quit" command terminates the telnet session.

Okay - now back to the big test. Create a message in Outlook to your Yahoo address. If it doesn't arrive, check your queues. If you see it stuck, check Message Tracking to see if it offers any clues.

EDIT: The email to my hotmail account from my Outlook client was delivered through the sendmail server. It did not go thru the FE server. Apparently the edit I made via ESM hadn't been pushed thru yet...

Messages (for my co-workers) are queueing in deferred... Using Message Tracker on one of these messages, the message is bouncing between the BE and the FE. On the BE, it does the following: Submitted to Advanced Started Message Submission to Advanced Queue Submitted to Categorizer Message Categorized and Queued for Routing Started Outbound Transfer of Message Message Routed and Queued for Remote Delivery Message transfered to <<FE server>> thru SMTP <<all the above steps repeats 3 more times, all within 1 min>> On the FE server, it does the same thing, trying to send it to the BE server....

If I configure the sendmail server as the smarthost, then messages go from the BE server to the sendmail server via SMTP, and thats the end of the log.... the mail gets delivered. When I specify the FE server as the smarthost, the mail seems to bounce between the 2, without ever going out and actually being delivered.... ?? Am I missing a configuration on the SMTP internet mail connector to make that hand-off only one-way? (outbound from BE to FE)

It sounds like the FE thinks it needs to reroute somewhere else to get the message out. In the ESM, under Routing Groups, does your FE show up in Members? How many Connectors are listed? If you look at the properties of each connector, does your FE show up as a bridgehead on the General tab? For the connector with the FE listed as bridgehead, is the "Use DNS..." or the "Forward all..." radio button selected? For what you are trying to do, "Use DNS..." should be selected.

I found it, Dean ... ~sigh~ It was a matter of bad timing: While waiting for the PTR record to be registered at Sprint (past few days), I had been making several DNS-related edits on the FE server. In the process, the "Register this on DNS..." checkbox was turned off. There was no registration on our internal DNS server for the FE server. So, the backend server didnt know who the FE server was. As soon as I added it, and then configured the SMTP Internet Mail connector to use DNS and the FE server as the bridgehead.... mail started flowing out to the internet. Thanks again for all your help Dean, I think this one is finally put to bed!
