Hello Tim,
I too have to do a SBS to SBS03 migrationg (Basically, a hadrware migration) in the next few days. I have been pointed to a "SWING MIGRATION" which i believe it involves a third server. The concept kind of makes sence but I need the details.

I am curerently seeking the documentation for it and will post here if i find something. We may be able to help each other out.

Am a little confused with requirements here.

What platform  version migration do you mean?

SBS2000 to SBS 2003 or Do are you want to add SBS2003 in to an existing domain (2000 or 2003).

I have sbs2003 with exchange, but the original install was kind of messed up, so now we have a new dell server with new workstations too and i want to start over fresh.

my question is, how do I move the existing users mail over to the new server? should i do a mailbox move, or should i export the mail from outlook to a pst file, then import that into the new workstation? i'm afraid that the original install might have garbage associated with it...

when i install sbs on the new server, do i create the user accounts in "manage your server" then go to the new workstation, connect to the server, open outlook and have it create the user's exchange account and mailbox? is there any problem with create the new account on the new server, and then trying to move the old mailbox over? will it merge from the old to the new or will it overwrite it?

should i name the new server the same name as the old server? won't that cause a problem when they are both connected to the network?

jeez i'm nervous about this. help !

The deal with SBS is that there can be only 1 in your environment. If you are running the Standard version  I would recommend  that you backup your exisiting SBS box. (If you really wanted to be extra careful, then exmerge the stores to PSTs).

Power off the exisiting SBS box.
Re-install SBS OS on the new box by booting from the CD-ROM.
Give it the same name & IP info as the old box.
When you get to the point where you need to install the SBS components, cancel the install.
Now install the latest Service Pack that was applied when you backed up the old box.
Afterwards boot the server to Directory Services Restore mode and perform a full restore from tape.

There should not be a need to work on the clients.

I would rather not do a backup, I would like a fresh install, with the ability to import the users previous emails. So I think I will do the export function in outlook to a pst file, and then open that pst file after the new workstation is setup on the new network.

I'm sorry I failed to mention that this is in a new bldg that we are moving to, so I am to have everything setup and working and then Friday night we will move the data from the old bldg to the new bldg and test over the weekend.

Can you tell me how to exmerge the stores, or would i just search for that term on google to learn more about it?

No worries. A few caveats though.  Using Exmerge will mean you lose single instance storage of attachments and as such you can expect your store to grow.
(General rule of thumb;- allow 110% of the size of your current store).

Users will lose their Outlook rules unless you back them up.

Exmerge.exe is a Microsoft Tool specifically designed for exporting mailboxes in Exchange.

thanks that was very helpful. i think i can backup the rules using tools > rules wizard > otions > export

sorry i have been away for so slong. the migration did not go well. when trying to use the add user wizard in SBS, it failed to proceed to the next dialog box, and it turns out something was added in service pack 2 called a DEP? data execution protection, which prevented thses exe from running. so I think the new sbs server was setup wrong. so we moved the old server and all the old computers from the old location to the new location and the users are working off them now while we retry the install fresh now.

what are the correct steps to apply service packs, etc? from a tutorial I read on this site, you should start the os install, but stop before it gets to the SBS portion, and then do windows updates. but should i apply service packs for the OS first? in the order of SP1, then SP2, then do windows update, then do Exchange SP1, then Exchange SP2?  I hope Exchange that comes with SBS gets the same service pack as the regular exchange 2003. ???

My first concern is to get the server right. Then I will worry about moving the mailboxes and user data later.

What book are you looking at on amazon?

Bearing in mind my previous comment re:
"The deal with SBS is that there can be only 1 in your environment"  a fresh installation would mean a new Forest and Domain. 

But if you still want to go down that route then I would install the SBS product in Full first, Then apply the most recent SP for the OS then apply the most recent SP for the Apps like Exchange, then run update.

Not that the book needs more promoting [8|] but its Henrik Walther's new E2K7 book.

The Swing Migration works really well if you are moving over all the info from one SBS2003 server to a new SBS2003 server.  We moved ours at the begining of the year and things went pretty smoothly.  You can check out thier site at http://www.sbsmigration.com/ for more info.

I've not used Swing IT, but either way you will have to Exmerge or Restore your Priv and Pub databases  to your new box.  Let us know how you get on.

well it was going to be this weekend, but a last minute relocation of an entire office (moving network cables, etc) postponed it, so now i have more time to experiment.

i don't really want to move the existing database, i'm going to start from scratch, and I'm going to export the stuff from each users outlook into a pst file, and then go through each one (there are only 16 employees with existing outlook accounts) and get rid of dumb jokes, videos, and basically worthless crap before i import their mail into the new system. i wish there was a way to enforce users to email a link to a video instead of emailing the entire video to everyone in the company. jeez

Consider this - Outlook blocks access to attachment types belonging to what it calls the "level 1" list stored in the registry.  Although it won't prevent your users from attaching the files, it will prevent them from seeing the attachments.  This will quickly change their behavior.

yes, their behavior will quickly change. it will change to their calling me crying that they can't see their favorite jokes and videos. ha ha. thanks for the tip.

Funny and sad at the same time because we all know it's true.  Seriously though, get Executive sponsorship (someone high-up that will back you) for banning the particular file types, send out a global announcement indicating the "corporate policy", then lock it down.

I also wanted to mention that if you are using Trend Micro's Scanmail, it has a blocked attachment list so you can do this at the server instead of having to push out a workstation-level registry change.
