We have two domains on the same LAN but different subnet’s. Both have exchange 2003 servers and their own GAL. Nothing is shared between the two domains and we do not need to share any resources or allow any users to log in to the other domain at present. We do, however, want to allow users to email each other internally (we have set up an SMTP connector for internal mail to stop it being redirected external to the organisation).

However, I am currently maintaining two address lists. If an employee joins/leaves then not only do changes have to be made for the domain in which they belong/work, but also on the other exchange server to keep the address list accurate and up to date.

Obviously I want a more elegant solution and some way to share/synchronise the address lists on the two domains. What would be the best way to solve my problem?

Thanks

We, too, have a similar situation...

We have two Exchange Orgs. in different domains/forests.  I thought I had this solved when I found information about using the IIFP (Identity Integration Feature Pack), but alas, MS wants to make money to get GALs to sync... It requires an organization to have a Windows 2k3 ENTERPRISE server. We only have Standards...

I would also be interested in finding a solution to creating contacts automatically between systems. We also wish to use the InterOrg Replication to share Free/Busy information, but I believe this requires a matching contact on the opposite system to match up the information (tiny little note in the MS document for setting this up).  Since the two seem directly related (replication needs contacts that GAL sync will give), it would be nice to find something that automates this.

Third party tools are fine as long as they aren't really expensive (like the cost of an Enterprise server...)

Hello (to both), the need for GAL Synchronization is quite common and there are a couple of solutions around to do this, e.g. HP LDSU, SimpleSync, MIIS/IIFP, ... Also you can develop your own code :-( We have found most solutions to be either to expensive (IIFP is free but requires SQL and an Enterprise license) or too complicated in setup, configuration and maintainance, and have developed our own service ADSynch Light(http://www.visioningPro.com). It uses templates, where basically you only specify the credentials for each side and already you could start. Also, any specific requirement, like changing displayname, replicating distribution groups as groups which can be expanded, ... can be configured easily, without the need for development.
Please, have a look at it, and if interested, we gladly will send you
an evaluation version and support you in setting up the GAL
Synchronization according to your requirements M.Mayr
