Hi Everyone,

Has anyone managed this successfully on Small Business Server 2003? I do not have SR2 i have service pack 2 and the Standard (no frills) 2003 server with 25 CALs.

Do i need to download any updates to make it work?
I have no ISA firewall either, just a hardware one at the gateway. I have not opened port 135 on this yet. I have 443 and 80 open as well as 110 and 143 for accessing mail remotely via the other (far inferior) methods.

I have tried it both remotely and locally (just on the LAN) neither seem to work. On the LAN, I create the account fine but whenever i check the outlook connection status on the 2003 test client it says TCP/IP NOT HTTPS as the connection protocol. if you get me...

Any advice is much appreciated. Step by step guides for fools also most welcome! (I have tried to follow a few mind you and its taken me to this brick wall). I need to get this working asap or i think my boss will be looking for a new remote support guy!!

The MS recommended remote email retrival for SBS is to use OWA through the Remote Web Workspace.  It is the most secure method.

Have you configured this?

Thanks, OWA is set up and we do use it but its not the solution the  users want to use. They prefer outlook and aparently it can be done so thats what i need help with.

Have you tried to follow the HTTP over RPC MS guide?

Have a read of this: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/833401/  it is applicable to SBS 2003 (amongst Exchange flavours)

Sorry but (why isnt everything straightforward?) i can only see information of the ins and outs of the process on the above link. Nowhere does there seem to be a step by step guide to it. I know it'd give me great satisfaction to work it out from Microsoft's very handy info but its a luxury i dont have time for at the moment. Any more practical guides would be very useful indeed.

I have one client working on SBS 2003 with a hardware firewall without major problems.  If I remember correctly, the SBS Connect to the Internet wizard pretty much took care of all the configuration changes you have to do manually on a regular Exchange 2003 box (I think I verified the changes, but I don't remember having to do anything manually - its been a while).  Just make sure "Outlook via the Internet" is checked in the wizard.

You should be able to bring up a client-side configuration step-by-step tailored to your domain if you access https://servername/remote , log in, and on the right-hand side, click on Configure Outlook via the Internet.

Also, I would make sure you have a third-party SSL certificate issued as opposed to the built-in SBS certificate so you don't have issues with manually installing that certificate on the client side.  You can buy a cheap turbo SSL from GoDaddy.

You must open ports 6000-6004 and forward them to the Exchange box. Look at http://support.microsoft.com/?id=833401#5.

only port 443 is needed for RPC via HTTP.  I have this operating on my system.  You can create the self-certified certificate, just make sure that it is the same name as the web site you use to access your server.  run the connect to the internet wizzard and it should configure everything for you.  Connect to your server via https://servername/remote to and install the website certificate.  Once loged in look on the right hand side for configure outlook via the internet link and follow the directions, they are customized for your information.
