autumncs -> outlook deleting emails (3.Apr.2007 2:28:40 AM)

Hi all,
Don't know if this the right place to put this but anyway.  I have exchange and about 4 computers connected to it, everything has been fine for 18 months 2 years yesterday the GM rings me to says he's not getting external emails but internal are fine, since about 10 am.

Had a look around and everything on the server looked fine, looked like some stuck emails so forced them through and logged in to his account via web mail and he had received the tests and all looked good.  Called me this morning saying that he still hadn't received any external emails.  Had a look and the tests were gone (not deleted in the deleted items) from the profile and sent some more tests and they showed up in the webmail then about 1 minute later they were gone again.

So went and had a look at outlook to see if it was a spam filter but no.  When Outlook syncs with the server it removed the new external emails completely from the server and doesn't show up in Outlook anywhere.  Closed Outlook and sent a couple more tests and they stayed on the server then opened Outlook again and it sync'd and removed the tests again.  This happens on two computers but with the same user and no other user is affected at the moment.

I have set up forwarding at the server to another user and to keep a copy with this user and the forward emails are fine.

I've got the GM to log in via webmail at the moment but don't want this to be a permanent solution.

Regards

Tim

Kinda sounds like a screwed up rule, to me. Or perhaps the GM has set up a Palm type device which downloads (instead of making copies) the messages when it syncs?

I have checked the rules and nothing is setup, I haven't checked the filtering.  will be check this today.  if there are any other suggustions that would be great.  The site is about 1/2 hour away so would love to be able to do one trip.

Oh, since it's a VP-type who's got the problem, does he/she have an assistant with access to his/her mailbox? Or, basically, could there be someone else who has access? Maybe that person thinks they are helping the boss keep up with his/her messages. You can check that by looking at the GM's user account in Active Directory Users and Computer, Exchange Advanced tab (or maybe Exchange General?) and mailbox rights.

I've checked the rules and filter, no one else has access except for the forwarding.  thinking about just setting it up as a pop account at the moment until I can work out a solution.  It's interesting that setting up the exchange account on another pc it does the same thing but the web mail is fine.

Thanks

also have nortons on here but I've turned all that off as well

autumncs -> RE: outlook deleting emails (4.Apr.2007 4:00:44 AM)

sorry for so many replies

another thing I've found is that it is only removing unread messages.  I've set up Outlook with a POP account as the default account and the exchange account as secondary and said to the POP account to leave a copy on the server, which is marking any new messages as read and when the Exchange account checks it leaves the email there.

Hope someone can help me.

Man, that problem is a real head-scratcher.

(Grasping at straws here.. ) Have you installed an antivirus scanner on the Exchange server recently? Or any other type of software? Could there be some new software on the GM's computer? Is the GM's network password easy to guess? (Although, if someone was logging on as the GM and reading his/her email, it would be mighty damn stupid of them to delete messages and thereby prove someone's poking around in that mailbox.)

You might consider running an integrity check on your Exchange databases this weekend. Just on the bizaare off-chance that's the problem. That will at least eliminate database corruption as a possible question mark.

I think I've totally run out of ideas on what it might be.. [:(]

Thanks Jassyca

I did the intergrity check, found nothing, no other software installed or updated except for MS updates.  I know the virus checker hasn't done anything because it's out of date and needs re subscription. GM password is medium.  It's been a mind bending issue, don't know why is just a single user.

With someone looking at the account, I've set up a new user for the GM and forwarding the old messages to the new account and leaving a copy on the old account.  The emails are fine in the new account and if you webmail to the old account the new emails are in there as well.  The new account is fine with outlook and webmail, the old account is fine with webmail but again when you use outlook the messages are removed again.

I've got the solution with the new account but would love to understand what has happened for future reference.
