Hi, Andy! We are doing not so well. I've just reinstalled GSH on both BE and FE servers. Didn't help... BUT there is one little thing I figured out. Now if you send files directly through BE OWA - files are going through just fine! Attachments get broken only if you send them through FE OWA. It seems to me that the problem is more or less connected to IIS on FE server. Any ideas? Regards, P.

Hiya mate, just to summerise, before the re-install attachments would corrupt on both the FE and BE - now they just corrupt on the FE? Just out of curiosity why do you have GSE on the FE server? - do you have Mailboxes on it, or are you using it to route SMTP? I will be around all day Thanks A

Hi there! Yep, there was a corruption issue on both servers before. No, there is on mboxes on FE, but FE is looking to internet as default SMTP server for main routing group. So, GSH is inspecting incoming smtp traffic. Same here

Ok, you mentioned that you are using a Cisco PIX firewall, I am beginning to suspect that, what model, version is the Firewall? - I am asked this as in version 7.2 of the PIX IOS there are multiple fixes for OWA. Also have a look here http://support.microsoft.com/kb/295725/en-us - this seems to match some of the problems that you are having (at least one symptom). Cheers A

Yeah, we are, but this is definately not a PIX issuecause I'm accessing FE from inside of LAN (PIX is not involved). SMTP is working just fine from outside.

Oh right, so there is an internal address for the FES? Could you do me a slight favour - I know that it is a pain, can we remove GSE from the FES entirely (you will still be protected on the BES) - if stuff is still going wrong, would you be willing (or is it possible) for me to have a look remotely? Cheers A

Yes, FES has an internal IP. I will remove GSE right now and check the results. But I'll have to disconnect internet connection fo that time. Unfortunately remote connection is strictly prohibited in our environment, so there is no chance... sorry about that.

No need to apologise, there are similar rules in my place it was just an off chance as sometimes it can be easier to see a problem visually. Let me know how you get on. A

Well, I did remove GSE out of FES. Didn't help! Everything is fine if you working on BES directly. But once you go through FES - here goes issue. How could that be possible? Istn't FES is just a proxy for BES?

Hiya Palan, what happens if a message is forwarded with an attachment, also, what happens if you save the attachment to the hard disk before you open it? Thanks A

Gday mate, Same sh*t happens if message w/attachment is forwarded. It doesn't matter if file is saved to disk or opened right from the OWA - once it was sent through OWA. I start thinking that I have IIS problem or BE2FE communication problem. Thank you for your help! P.

Hi Andy! Really sorry for that long delay – I had a business trip to the middle of nowhere. Now I'm back and here what I'm going to do: install a new server 2003 + Exchange + all hot fixes demote FES of front-end role and remove it from Exchange organization promote a new server to front-end role check if problem still persist. The main thing which is keeping me from doing all mentioned above is that all servers are productive and I just can not do anything till the long weekend or holidays. So, once I finish I'll post a report. P.S. I have Certification Authority installed on FES. Just wonder if I can remove it completely and than simply install all from scratch on a new server. Should be there any problem after all? P.P.S. Does it makes any sense if the new server will be 2003R2 and BES is 2003SP1? For now FES and BES are all the same 2003SP1 (+all hf after SP1). What if Exchange is completely the same and OS is a bit different? Did you ever try to upgrade the first Exchange server in organization from 2003 to 2003 R2? Thank you for your help! Regards, P.

Andy! I think I did it. It's working now perfectly. You pointed me right. I was absolutely sure that IIS and Exchange are working properly. Than you wrote "3. Something wrong in the OS". I started from network interface and gues what - it's a Realtek RTL1869 Gigabit NIC with Offload TCP_LargeSend set to Enabled. Once I disabled that option everything goes just fine. S**t, why did they set this param to be enabled by default? Did they ever tested that before? I'm doing a stress test right now. It seems that files go through like they should. Man, thank you so much for your help! You are great! Thanks

Andy, it's confirmed - everything is fine now. Just wonder if we should send this issue to MS knowledge base? It could save somebody’s time and health. Do you know the right way to do that? Thanks again and best regards, P.

Hiya Palan, I believe that issues to the KB are submitted via Microsoft PSS - I don't have a contact for them to hand - however there are a couple of other things that you could do - for example, place the final solution in the tips section of this site - I have noticed that when googling for things MSExchange.orgs forums get pulled up a lot. Cheers, A
