Ok, I ran some memory tests on the server and the eseutil /k utility on Exchange databases and everything checked out ok. Let me know if this is unusual results from the database checker utuility: 611328 pages seen 118388 uninitialized pages So, I'm left clueless why my Exchange server locks up a couple times a week. Maybe it has nothing to do with Exchange... don't know. Thanks

It may not bee related to the DB, but something going on with the backup process, possibly a corrupt dll. See if you can get that remote exchange backup working from another server. James Chong (MVP) MCSE | M+, S+, MCTS, Security+ msexchangetips.blogspot.com

Hi Guys, I'm having an identical problem running Exchange standard 2003 SP2 on Server 2003 Standard SP2. I'm backing up to file over the network but have tried local file backup too. Other backups e.g system state and data backups run fine. I'm not 100% sure but may happen at the same point every time in the backup, about 85 - 95% of the way through the backup. It also doesn't happen every time, maybe 88% failure rate. The domain only has 6 or so client PC's, all running XP Pro SP2 and the server is the only server in the forest. As such its the DC, DNS, DHCP, Exchange and file server. Used very lightly however as its only a very small business. database maintenance is run from 2- 6 am and this fault occurs if the backup is run manually or scheduled. All backups runusing the enterprise admin user account. No hardware fault on the system either, although I may try moving the database and log files from their current location of partition e:\ to perhaps the data partition in case its a hard drive issue. Any more suggestions would be graetly appreciated. njdouglas

The system locks up totally and requires me to press the reset button No mouse movement, no keyboard and the progress bar freezes. Nothing else other than usualserver system services are running Other software on the server includes Acronis Trueimage Server, Belkin Bulldog UPS SW. I'm using NTBackup as installed by exchange 2003. There is no error messages in the event viewer to indicate any problem after or before the lockup. The backup log is completely empty for the backup that freezes although the backup log file is created, its just never populated. Its also a brand new install of Server 2003 and exchange 2003 on new hardware. Have run the Exchange Best Practices Analysers and the only fault is that the system pages are set to high. I havn't fixed that yet. I have also run the Exchange Load Sim on the server with no problems although 10 mailboxes still exist from the load test and are disabled. Exchange Datbase size is around 2.3 GB. Backup fails and system lockup occurs about 2.1 GB. Log file and Database are on the same partition which is not the system partition (i know I need to separate the logs and DB at some point).

Try the following, 1. Make sure no one is logged in when the backup job is running 2. Make sure you're not combining other backup jobs with your exchange job. 3. Try to backup a large file by itself to see if your ntbackup hangs. Would like to isolate if you have some disk related issues that is locking up your system. James Chong (MVP)

Are you storing network pst on your exchange box? or in general also using your exchange box for file server related services? James Chong (MVP) MCSE | M+, S+, MCTS, Security+ msexchangetips.blogspot.com

My nightmare continues. At the weekend I picked up the server from the customer. Suspecting either IE7, Panda BusinessSecure Exchange (corporate AV) or Belkin Bulldog UPS software, I uninstalled all three. Then I ran some backups, all good. Then I reinstall Panda admin console only, Run more good backups. Then I install Panda File Protection on the server. More good backups. Then I install Panda Exchange Component. More good backups. Then I reinstall belkin Bulldog. More good backups. OK, now I install Exchange load sim and run a si to generate log file. After each sim I run backup. All good (5 in total). Its now Saturday Evening so I set the backup to run every hour until monay morning. No problems. Deliver server back to pissed customer. Monday night I run a manual exchange backup. No problems. Tuesday night I schedule a backup and it locks out!!!! Only difference I can see is the UPS is attached at the customers address, but not at time. Surely a UPS cannot cause this?

Exchange is not recommended on a DC, however this should not affect NT backup from running and causing it to freeze. However, you never know anytime a combination of factors are into play. But try this since it is a DC as well. When the backup runs take it off the network and try running the backup. James Chong (MVP) MCSE | M+, S+, MCTS, Security+ msexchangetips.blogspot.com

Ok, I will try disabling the NIC before backup. As for Exchange not being recommended on a DC, Microsoft are a right bunch of hypocrites. If thats the case why do they sell a product that does exactly that (SBS Server)?. Not only that but they also say you shouldn't have any less than 2 DC's on a domain, yet SBS won't talk to another SBS server on the same domian, you have to then buy 2003 server standard. For small businesses its unrealist to expect them to shell out on two servers, two copies of Server 2003 and 2 setup and confituration charges.

I have seen a UPS do some strange things to my systems. I have an APC hooked up to my server via the data port, and every time the UPS goes over to battery it causes the system to freeze. But only when the UPS is connected to the server with the data port. As soon as I unhooked the port, no problems what so ever.

Hello all: I'm having a similar issue with my exchange server locking up on me. Just last night it locked up on me, and prior to last nights lockup, it locked up on me two Fridays ago. This has been an on going issue for us for the past few months. We have exchange enterprise w/ sp2 with server 2k3 w/ sp2. We upgraded from exchange 2k on server 2k back back in Sept of 06. I installed McAfee Groupshield about 2 months after I did the upgrade. After I installed Groupshield I started to get the lockup. Groupshield was blowing up with event logs, so I uninstalled Groupshield and it didn't lock up on me for about 3 months. Now for about a month now it seems to be locking up on me again. Right now I do not have Groupshield installed on there. I do have McAfee a/v running though, but I do not see any event logs from the a/v. Exchange is on it's own server. Nothing else is running on it besides exchange. I do the eseutil and the isinteg every other week and everything goes through okay.I have also done a defrag on the drives on the exchange server about 2 weeks ago. We do have a big database, it's a little over 31GB . The entire server gets backed up every night. It doesn't lock up on backup like the other guys. Last night it locked up at around 12 midnight. The online defrag is set to run from 2-6am. It locks up at random times, normally during the night, but I have had it lock up on me in the afternoon on a Sunday before. When it locks up, I have to come in the office and do a cold reboot on it. I use big brother to monitor our servers, and it looks like all the other services are still running, but I can't remote to the server, ping, get to OWA or anything. If anyone has any suggestions for me to try, as I have tried all that I know to trouble shoot this issue. Let me know if you need any other information. Thanks in advanced for your help!!
