Hiya Sunny, have you considered deleting the IUSR accounts then restarting the IIS services (which will recreate the accounts)? Thanks A

I only deleted the IUSR account not the IWAM. I also configured the use HTTPS instead of HTTP, but still no good only last about half a day.

Hiya Sunny, sorry for the delay I have been away on business and scratching my head. I have managed to replicate the same problem as you - sort of. What I have done is removed (unticked) the anonymous access account on the Exchweb folder in IIS - then restarted the system attendant which produces the same results as you are getting. I then moved on, left the anonymous account ticked - but changed the password to something (in IIS) that was incorrect - and got the same results. The question here is, when the problem manifests itself - before you restart, can you check the permissions on this folder in IIS, if they are intact, can you reset the anonymous account password in computer management to something you know and then update the password it in IIS - then try again - if this works, then we know that something is messing around with that account - also, do you use ISA server internally as a web proxy? Cheers A

I just ran into the same problem as Sunny.C. I needed to reset the Exchange OWA and OMA directories due to possible corruption. I followed the steps from http://support.microsoft.com/kb/883380. Before this, my website mail.domain.net/exchange would pull up an Exchange Web Page to log into the OWA and gave options of Basic or Premium client. Afterward, attempting to access the website would immediately bring up a Connect to mail.domain.net connection box requiring Username and Password. Once I do log in, I go straight to the mailbox of the Username. The lefthand menu loads, but the message section continues to show 'Loading'. I am also getting the Event ID:1040 "Metabase Update failed replication 5 times with error 80070003 (The system cannot find the path specified) My situation is pretty much the same: I have only one Exchange server, no FE/BE. Exchange 2003 SP2. Maybe of note, we are running Windows 2003 SBS. I'm done a lot of googling and searching sites, but so far haven't found a solution to this problem. I have not yet tried to Reinstall Exchange over itself because all my work was done remotely. I should have someone in the office on Tuesday to put the CD in. I'd really like to get this fixed if I could just find what PATH the system is looking for.

Yes it sounds like a very similar problem but i am not running SBS. I am 95% sure that this is related to the IIS accounts or IIS permissions. When was the last time OWA worked properly for you?

Let me first say that I don't mean to intrude on your post with my own troubles. If our issues prove different, I'll start a seperate thread. OWA last worked for me on May 26, this past Saturday, right before I deleted the six Exchange related virtual directories in IIS. I have solved my login/certificate issue. I just had to check 'Require 128bit encryption' on the certificates. Also, I had backed up the IIS configuration, so I just created new virtual directories from file and imported the six deleted directories as new virtual directories and then compared all settings with the new directories. This was done about 17 hours before this current post. At this time, the OWA is loading correctly. However, I think yours worked for a day or two, so I'm not convinced I'm out of the wood yet. I am still getting the original Event ID:1040. One thing that I may have missed, but saw another poster asking you about, was an initial error message or Event ID. I'm getting an Event ID 116: Source EXOLEDB Microsoft Exchange OLEDB was unable to initialize even system correctly. Support for store event may have been disabled. HRESULT=<value>. Are you getting anything similar to this? Here is where our problems may deviate. At present, the OWA page requires me to login with domain\username. I can put the default domain in Exchange virtual directory, but it holds it for only about 15 seconds and then reverts back to the backslash. I have found that I can make changes to all other virtual directories, except for the Exchange one. This is likely the result of the message "Metabase Update failed replication". Anyway, to sum it up: Event ID 116 appears on restart of Exchange services. Event ID 1040 appears every 15 minutes. Exchange virtual directory will not hold changes made. OWA is loading correctly for 17 hours. George

Well Sunny, I"m now in the same place as you. I have the Event ID 1040 error and OWA loading error after several hours of the server being up. All other issues have been resolved. Just a couple hours ago I did an Exchange Reinstall and then reinstalled SP2 to see if that would fix the error as described in the MS article (although I hadn't reinstalled IIS). Hard to believe all this happened because I deleted and recreated the virtual directories. George

ORIGINAL: FortitudeGP Hard to believe all this happened because I deleted and recreated the virtual directories. George The only problem i am facing now is OWA falls over after a couple hours. What windows platfrom are you running on? What spam and antivirus are you running? Like i said i am pretty sure you and i have the same problem and that it is a account related problem. Give this ago. 1) Open AD Users & Computers. Expand the Users OU, right-click on the IUSR_<servername> account and select 'Reset password' Reset the password to anything you want (however, it can't be blank). 2) Open this User Account's properties and verify that the account is not locked out :^) Also, make sure that 'Password never expires' and 'User cannot change password' are selected. 3) Repeat steps 1 & 2 for the IWAM_<servername> account. Close AD Users & Computers. 4) Open Internet Information Services (Start | Administrative Tools) 5) Expand <servername> | Web Sites 6) Right-click on 'Default Web Site' and select Properties. 7) Go to the 'Directory Security' tab and click the Edit button under 'Authentication & Access Control' 8) Enter the new password for the IUSR_<servername> account and click OK. 9) Enter the password again to confirm and click OK. 10) Click OK. 11) Open a command prompt and enter iisreset 12) At the command prompt, enter the following commands: cd c:\inetpub\adminscripts adsutil SET w3svc/WAMUserPass <password> (Where <password> = the password you entered for the IWAM_<servername> account in AD Users & Computers) c:\windows\system32\cscript.exe "c:\inetpub\adminscripts\synciwam.vbs" -v iisreset

I've already checked the metabase password and reset the password in all locations. My SystemMailbox object was also missing and had to be recreated. Yes, I am using a SMTP connector. At present, the Event ID 1040, OWA loading, and the Exchange virtual directory not holding changes are my problems. (and it's just the Exchange vd, the other 5 directories involved will hold any changes I make.)

Following up on this, my OWA loading problem and Event ID 1040 were both cleared up the afternoon of May 31. I deleted the current SMTP connector under Routging Groups and used the Email and Internet Connection Wizard to create a new SMTP connector. Once that was done, I haven't had any more problems with this error. George

Yes i thought so, event id 1040 is some how related to the connector. That is why i asked you the above question. Are you still having OWA issues?

No more OWA problems that I know of. However, I'm now having problems syncing our Cingular 8125s with the Exchange server. I'm getting a Support code: 0x85010004 when trying to sync. "Your account in Microsoft Exchange Server does not have permission to synchronize with your current settings." Hopefully, it won't take me long to solve this one.
