Hi to all.

This is mi first message. Hi to all again [&:].

I have a problem with a RG in two sites.
I connecto two servers with RG, all works fine. But i show in a Sniffer log that the smtp comunication in one way doesnīt end with a "." dot.

I explain it.
All the standard smtp comunications end with a DOT. In one way Server1 ends ok, but Server2 can do it.

For Exchange there is no problem, but if you put a bridge or antivirus in the middle the comunication doesnīt work, only in one way.

I try to change the RG connector with a SMTP RG Connector, but the problem persists.

Can any configuration or hotfix change the standard end dot of the smtp comunicaction?

I know of no Exchange hotfix or configuration setting that will affect the dot at the end of an SMTP message transmission.  That is basic and essential to SMTP.

Does this mean that Server2 cannot send any messages to Server1?  What happens to the messages?  Have you used Message Tracking to see how far into the process they get?  Are they stuck in a queue?  Which queue? 

You said that activating antivirus will cause the problem to appear.  Which antivirus software are you using?

Hi,

Mi english is bad,  i would try explain the problem.

Y have two exchange 2003 servers. Server1 and Server2. I use SMTP RG.

I have to put a SMTP Bridge (a antivirus/antispam trendmicro appliance) between the servers.

The two servers send and recive internal email OK. But only when the SMTP SCANINING is not activated in the middle.

I get sniffer logs in the two servers.
The server1 ends the SMTP comunication with a DOT, but the server2 not. For exchange there is not a problem, works ok.
But, when i activate the smtp scanning in the appliance i have problems. The server1 can sen mail to the server2 and the server2 canīt send mail to server1.

The Technical Support of TrendMicro tells the problem is exchange in server2, that not end the smtp communication with a DOT, and the appliance donīt undestand this variation of the protocol.

No apologies necessary.  I think your English is perfectly understandable.

There is nothing I can think in Exchange of that would cause improper formatting of the dot at the end of an SMTP transmission from an Exchange server.  The dot signifies the end of the message body according to SMTP specifications.  In fact, the receiving system treats everything after the "data" command as the body of the message until it receives a properly formatted dot.  When your AV bridge is deactivated, the same thing applies to Server1 receiving the message.  If Server1 never received a properly formatted dot, it would have the same problem.

Questions: 
When Server2 sends a message to Server1, does it remain in the Exchange queue?
Did you look at Message Tracking?
Is there a message stuck at the top of the queue that won't clear?
Did Trend Micro tell you they have encountered this problem before?  If so, what do they suggest to troubleshoot?  Their engineers have a deep knowledge of Exchange - ask them to escalate your issue if the person you speak to doesn't offer a specific solution.

Also, download and use the Best Practices Analyzer (ExBPA), and the Troubleshooting Assistant (ExTRA) from Microsoft to see if it offers any insight.

If the AV Brigde is activatedm the message from Server2 to Server1 is remain on the q queue.
I  deactivate the AV bridge and the message is sent ok.

Trendmicro that says that it modifies the configuration of exchange so that it sends the DOT. But I cannot do it. But not since one becomes. Supposing that it is possible to be done.

I'm not familiar with the AV Bridge appliance you are using.  Do you have to configure Server2 to send to the appliance?  If so, where and how?  Do you also have to configure the appliance to send to Server1?

How do you activate/deactivate the Bridge?

The servers are connected with a SMTP RG over a wan.
The AV  Bridge are inte middle. It have a smtp configuration that i can change. I can turn on or tunrn off. When is turn off the bridge letīs all the smtp trafic go to the server1 to the server2 and the other way around.

1. Are you using a Smarthost setting on Server1 and Server2 to force the mail through the Bridge?
2. It sounds like you activate/deactivate the Bridge using an interface to the Bridge device.  Am I correct in stating that you do not alter any Exchange settings to activate/deactivate the Bridge?

Hi

1.- No. In this case i only have two servers in the organization in two administrative groups. The servers are connected with SMTP RG.

2.- No. Is  software switch. The appliance have a Web Console, have a lot of configuratiosn. SMTP, HTTP, .... I cant turnoff or turnon each one of independent form via software. The appliance is not disconnect in no case of phisical form.

The 180 Euros solution

1.  Click Start, click Run, type regedit , and then click OK. 
2.  Locate and then click the following registry subkey:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Exchange 
3.  Right-click Exchange, point to New, and then click Key. 
4.  Type StoreDriver , and then press ENTER. 
5.  Right-click StoreDriver, point to New, and then click Key. 
6.  Type Exchange , and then press ENTER. 
7.  Right-click Exchange, point to New, and then click Key. 
8.  Type 1 , and then press ENTER. 
9.  Right-click 1, point to New, and then click DWORD Value. 
10.  Type EnableTnef , and then press ENTER. 
11.  Right-click EnableTnef, and then click Modify. 
12.  In the Value data box, type 1, and then click OK.
13.  Exit Registry Editor

And the dot appears.
And all works ok.

Thank you for the follow-up.  Searching Microsoft's support site for that registry entry only returned two links, neither of which gives any clue that it is related to the symptom you were seeing.  Whoever got you that information did some serious digging!
