I’m working at this moment in a virtualization project witch includes a migration from exchange 2000 to exchange 2007. The virtualization will be done in a VMware solution. So I’d like to know tow things: First I’d like to have some feedback for someone having set up Exchange 2007 in VMware machine in a production environment. And I’d like to know if it’s possible to implement a CCR between tow Exchange 2007 mail box servers running in VMwares machines. Dose it work properly?
" Exchange 2007 is not supported in production in a virtual environment; however, as stated above, Microsoft Virtual Server makes a great environment for training, labs, and demos. Exchange 2007 is supported in production environments using only the 64-bit version of Exchange 2007, and currently neither Microsoft Virtual Server nor Microsoft Virtual PC support 64-bit guest systems. Exchange 2007 is also not supported in production in a virtual environment using non-Microsoft virtualization software. For details about the Microsoft support policy for third-party virtualization software, see Microsoft Knowledge Base article 897615, Support policy for Microsoft software running in non-Microsoft hardware virtualization software. "
Yes Microsoft does not test or support Microsoft software running in conjunction with non-Microsoft hardware virtualization software but that does not stop VMware server consolidations projects; and the number of virtualization projects involving with Windows Server and other MS soft in VMWare environment are growing in an exponential manner. So I think it’s not a good reason not set up Exchange 2007 in a VMware virtual machine witch by the way supports 64 bits.
CCR clusters works just fine on VMWare servers (have tested this in my own production environment since beta 2 and in a couple of labs environments), but as already mentioned it's not supported by Microsoft unless you have an Enterprise agreement (and even though this is the case also can repro an issue on physical hardware).

Yep, I know it's not supported, but I figured somebody knows what the "real" story is...
Using ESX 3.0.1 Build 42829, I repeatedly receive "Not enough resources are available to complete this operation" errors during the CCR Active Node installation. I haven't had any problems using physical hardware... I've allocated a x64 CPU and 6GB of memory to the VMs, which I would expect is enough to at least complete the installation. Does anybody have any expereince with successful installations on ESX?

Hi Hinek, Lets setup 2 node of CCR Exchange 2007. You need config Windows Cluster to can deploy Exchange CCR First install Window server on both nodes. And then config Windows cluster on Node 1: Config Cluster by normal step, when you are asked to location Quorum disk, lets choose "Majority Node Set". On the Proposed Cluster Configuration page, verify that the information is correct, and then complete the installation. Lets turn on your node2 and add it to cluster by cluster administrator on Node1. Create share folder on your Hub transport server (exchange 2007 not Mail box server roles). grand fster. Verify you can connect to that folder from node1 or node2 of your cluster. Open command prompt and type: Cluster DavtupCluster res "Majority Node Set" /priv MNSFileShare="\\Hubsvr\Davtupshare" When DavtupCluster is your Cluster name, \\hubsvr\Davtupshare is UNC locate your share folder, and then press Enter. OK. Now you just configured you cluster. Next step: install Exchange 2007 Of couse you need install Exchange Prerequisites first. On node1 run setup exchange 2007, select Active Clustered Mailbox Role, you must input information for your exchange Cluster name and IP address. When you complete you node1 go to node2 and select Passive Clustered Mailbox Role. By this way you can deploy Exchange 2007 CCR on phisycal machine, VMWare Workstation, VMWare Server, Virtual machine, Vitual Server.... Lets try it and there are some problems, contact me davtup@gmail.com Good luck!

hi henrik,
Even i would like to test CCR in one of the production by virtualization method, what will be the best practice having two node in the same physical server or different servers? any recommendation you have
