Guys,
 
How do I achieve load balancing for Client Access Server? With EX2K3, I used to have 2 FE with NLB.
 
Considering I'm deploying CAS and HT at same server (they are two in total), How will it work?
 
I want all remote connections to EX2k7 (OWA, RPC over Https, and so on) be directed to any of these two server.

1. if you want to ensure your CAS and HT are on the same box and load balance them, make it sure that the Listener of the NLB interface is set to listen only on 80 and 443.
 
2. Your server is referred to by your NLB name only and not the "host names.

This is done basically the same way in E2K7, but as mentioned make sure you exclude port 25 if the HT role is installed on these boxes too.

Also have in mind  you need to take the virtual cluster name into consideration, when making a request for a SAN certificate.

The SAN certificate needs to include the following FQDNs:

- FQDN of both NLB nodes
- Virtual cluster name
- NetBIOS name of each NLB node (if you want to be able to use short names instead of FQDN)

Why Should I exclude TCP 25 port from the NLB listener? Doesn't make sense have smtp service balanced too?

garconer, I think you'd exclude port 25 because CAS doesn't use it. Load balancing the Hub Transport is handled by exchange/active directory.

HT servers have resiliency built in by default, so it would give no meaning to load balance this role using NLB.

BTW I'm doing an article on this subject which will be released on MSExchange.org in the near future.

I was planning on going down this road and exclude port 25 from NLB, but then I read somewhere (written by MVP) that it is not a supported sollution until SP1 for E2K7 is official. Can somebody confirm? I'd really love to have 2 CAS+HT instead of 2 CAS + 2 HT

Correct! Alhtough this type of setup works just fine, it's not supported by MS before E2K7 SP1. The reason behind this is that the Exchange product group didn't have the time to do extensive testings with this type of scenario, before E2K7 RTM shipped.

I have 2 servers both running CAS and HUB roles.  I know that the HUB role by itself is fault tolerant, but I want a single outward facing address/name for my OWA and ActiveSync users.  Is there a good way to NLB the CAS Role on the above servers, while not messing with the HUB role:?

Personally, I would put 2 CAS only servers in a DMZ. I know ISA can help but have no experience with that. If you are using 2 severs on an internal network, make sure your firewall is taking care of business but I would not recommend that.

Anyway, NLB the 2 servers, requre SSL and get an SSL Cert for the NLB named. That is the only external inbound port required for activesync.
