Ron S -> Exchange backups (1.Jul.2007 2:19:34 PM)

I have not worked with Exchange until a couple of weeks age. I was asked to help a church who's Backup Exec (Veritas) backups quit working on 4 Apr. They are using 2000 Server, Exchange 2000 Server and Backup Exec 8.6. They have Windows automatic updates turned on. Update KB925902 was installed on 4 Apr and their backups quit working that day. Nothing else was changed. The backups had worked for several years.

Something seems to have changed with the permissions for Backup Exec and/or the administrator. The administrator seems be a member of all the correct groups.

I may have misunderstood or gotten bad information on how to correctly backup Exchange.

I have found that everything on the server can be backed up EXCEPT the Exchange mailboxes. The error is "access denied" if the mailboxes, except the administrators, are attemped to be  backed up. The permissions look like the permissions screen in tutorial "How to get access to all mailboxes in Exchange 2000 Server". I do NOT want permissions to read others mailboxs only back them up.

After looking at "Understanding the Exchange Information Store" and "Backing up Exchange 2000 using Windows 2000 Backup" for Exchange 2003 I may not really have a problem. I CAN backup the Information Store. To ask the question so I understand the answer.

To backup and be able to recover Exchange data:

I ONLY need to backup the Information Store.

In other words I DO NOT need to backup the individual mailboxes.

In other words I am protecting the Exchange information by ONLY backing up the Information Store.

Thanks in advance
Ron S

hi,

for having a successful backup
you need to take the backup of database i.e priv1.edb & priv1.stm and Public store database : pub1.edb & Pub1.stm along with log files

This all will be the part of the infromation store
for more information see this link

Ron,
I am having the same exact problem.  If you want to be able to restore a single mailbox with backup exec, you need a backup of the mailboxes.  You can recover exchange with the Info store backup, but not a single mailbox.  It seems to be in bad taste to back up the mailboxes, but it sure is nice if one user has a problem.  I backup both, but as of late, I can only backup the info store and my credentials to backup the mailboxes returns the error [access denied].  It is the same credentials as the info store though.

Anyone else have any thoughts?

Rob

Ron S -> RE: Exchange backups (6.Jul.2007 10:10:04 AM)

Both of the previous threads seem to say that if I am getting successfull backups of the Information Store that the Exchange data can be recovered. However; recovering individual mailboxes or email messages would be more difficult.

I am going to take the 2 replies to the original post as an explicit YES that I am backing up the Exchange data in a mannor that the data can be restored if necessary.

If I'm making a bad assumption would someone please correct me.

thank you
ron

one more thing i would like to add when u said what about individual mailbox backup.

Well if u r using ntbackup then full restore and preferred is on RSG.
If u are using veritast backup then you can go for bricklevel backup which takes individual mailbox backup
