Hi Andy, sounds very promising, and I was looking to upgrade with the service packs for exchange for spamming problems, so it will kill two birds with one stone.
But I can go straight ahead and update to service pack 2? or should i take it in steps and go to sp1 then sp2? I know sp2 should cover sp1.

Although it says :

To avoid long delays in rebooting Windows Server 2003 Domain Controllers that also have Exchange Server 2003 installed on them, apply Service Pack 2 for Exchange Server 2003. I hope it literally means that AD will tell exch services to wait for all directory services to load , then exch is allowed. If it really works in the reverse of how it behaves for shutdown, [tell exch its shutting down, and wait for exch to shut down then AD shutdown]

Hiya mate, as are correct service packs are cumulative, therefore you should be OK going to SP2. I am not sure exactly what SP2 does, but it certainly seems to cover the problems that you are having, let me know.

Hey Andy, I am soon gona try out Service Pack 2, but something I came across, i thought i should throw it at you.
what if we try the recovery options for the exchange services? like put the restart the services to 5mins or something.

Hiya mate, the restart options are for services that have crashed out, they do not delay start up - I am not sure how this would help chap.

Well we know a delay would be the right timing to avoid the wrong timing. But isnt failure of SA starting considering a failure to start? as the options would indicate? So if it fails to start it probably would try to start in teh defauly 1min, but thats probably too short of a time.

Hiya Dave, my understanding of these settings are that they come into play when a service crashes out, rather than the service not starting.
Just out of interest, when you get the messages in the event log, am I correct in saying that the mail service does start eventually without intervention on your behalf?
If that is the case then again I would feel that these options would not help and that the SP is perhaps your best route.

Andy, the mail services DO NOT start eventually , only when I manually start them it starts.
I checked the settings on the recovery tab for exchange services, and they are all set with TAKE NO ACTION.
Another topic, from your experience, check this scenario you company email is andy@comp.com your personal email is andy1@home.com
you frequently send stuff from andy@comp to andy1@home spam that are usually sent to @comp is now reaching @home , and one day you are gettin andy1@home.com sending fake emails to andy@comp.com
First thing someone might say is it is a virus, but does spam servers work in such a way that they try all possible at the domain to get success and make a list from that? what do you think????

Hiya Dave, try that setting then, but I am skeptical that it will work in the way in which you expect.
It is possible that a directory harvest has been performed, and in some cases there is malware that will try combinations of mail addresses from a company as most companies use common formatting in their e-mail addressing <inital.surname> for example.
