Hello, We have two offices connected via Cisco Routers and Site to Site VPNs, IPSec. Each Office has an Exchange Server, one is Master the other is Member. Initailly all the mailboxes lived on the first Exchange Server, we've now migrated some mailboxes to the remote Exchange Server for users based at that office... When we do this all users can send and recieve emails externally, but users can only send to there local office, internal email will not flow accross to both offices.. We are a single windows 2003 Domain running Exchange 2003 SP2. Any help greatly appreciated as its driving us mad..??

When we do this all users can send and recieve emails externally, but users can only send to there local office, internal email will not flow accross to both offices.. I am not able to understand it clearly, could you please ellaborate it

Sorry, basically users at both offices can send and receive external email, but internal email will not flow between offices. userA and userB are at office 1, they can send and receive external emails. userC and userD are at office2, they too can send and receive external emails. However userA and userB cannot send to userC or D and vice versa. Although userA abd userB can send to each other as they are in the same office, same for userC and userD. All email flows from the master exchange server which is at office1.

hi, How is your mailflow happen between this two server, does it ever worked before. What is connector between this two server. Any non-delivery report? Run exbpa, Extra also EXMFA tool (www.exbpa.com) If then also not resolved please run winroute tool

Hello, Winroute is successful between both Exchange Servers, in both directions. I Have noticed that in message tracking when sending between users in the same office Exchange queued for local delivery, and Email is delivered ok. When sending between users at different offices Exchange queues for remote delivery, and Email never arrives.

Installed exbpa and passed, connectivity, health and permissions tests...!!

hi, what abot extra tool !!! what about telnetting? After increasing diagnostic logging any possible event do you have any smart host configuration if so then remove smart host configuration from the SMTP virtual server and configure it on a SMTP connector instead

Hello, Telnet to port 25 ok in either direction. I deleted the smart host and configured the SMTP Connector still exactly the same. you cannot email locally between offices.

Pardon the intrusion... When you telnetted in both directions, were you successful in creating and sending a message, or did you only establish the connection? http://exchangeguy.blogspot.com/2007/06/using-telnet-to-simulate-server.html What does Message Tracking say about the disposition of the messages? Are the messages stuck in a queue? Is it the queue to the opposite server?

This is a single domain, when users send email to other users in their office the respective Exchange Server Tracking reports: Message queued for local delivery -- Then message is delivered. When the same users send email to users in the remote office (in either direction) the Exchange server Tracking system reports.. Message routed and queued for remote delivery.

You didn't answer my Telnet question. Let me explain my thought process... If Telnet succeeds and the normal messages get stuck on the source server, that seems to indicate an issue with Exchange and/or SMTP on the source server. If Telnet succeeds and the normal messages get stuck on the destination server, that seems to indicate an issue with Exchange on the destination server. Will the queued messages flush if you restart the Exchange services on either or both servers? Also, how long has this issue been happening? When did it last work correctly, and what changes (updates, patches, installations) were made around that time?

Hello, I can telnet to either Exchange Server, but the moment i type e (as in ehlo) it drops the connection, this happens for either Exchange Server. This Exchange environment has been in place for quite a while, only the remote exchange server was never used, we've only just moved some mailboxes to it.. The queues dont clear if exchange is restarted.

When you first establish the connection, does it identify itself as your Exchange server running Microsoft ESMTP?

When you perform the telnet test, are you executing it on one Exchange server connecting to the other? Does it do the same thing if you do it from a different system (e.g. your workstation)? Are the two servers in the same subnet?

Yes the Telnet is executed from one Exchange to the other. The two Servers are in different Offices on different Subnets. As for the Telnet you could be onto something.. While Telnetting locally to the Exchange Server's all works ok, but if i Telnet to the Remote Exchange Server its connects ok, but as soon as i type the first e (for ehlo) it drops to the command line. This happens in either direction, it is all ok when done locally.

Just to be sure, I'd use TraceRt to verify the communication path is what you think it should be. Then I'd concentrate on routers and firewalls (and possibly switches) between the two servers.

tracert worked great in both directions, looking ito the VPN etc.. Not sure if this could be down to NAT and VPN Traffic...

I think the VPN/router/firewall devices are the place to look. I'd also suggest you look at the logs for each to see if that provides any clues as to what is happening. Did you look at the SMTP logs on your Exchange servers?
