Have new Exchange Server 2003 installed and functioning. No errors in event log.
NetDiag and DCDiag passed without errors. On Outlook client, I cannot get the Exchange server address list to be seen. However, on same machine, OWA client works fine. Symtom occurs on all machines I have tested (XP and 2000).

Any ideas on what direction I should go to troubleshoot this?

Thanks in Advance.

Hiya Can each machine that you have tried ping either the FQDN of the Exchange server or the NETBIOS name.

Do the client machines have the same DNS suffixes as the Exchange server?

Cheers

Thanks for responding! Yes to both. I can ping the server name and Exchange FQDN XXXXXXXX.XXXXXXXXX.local from all the desktop machines. I have also throw a shotgun blast accross the test Outlook users, and made them Admins of the Exchange server.

Just a bit of history... several months ago, I built a test Exchange 2003 server and added it to our domain. The server (physically a desktop machine) was grabbed by a another person and re-imaged as a user machine. I then had to go through the process of cleaning out AD of all traces of Exchange and start over. (note, at that time, Exchange worked with these Outlook test machines/users)

Thanks again for helping, and any further advice would be appreiciated!

Ok, interesting.
Have the Outlook clients worked since (e.g have they been broken for several months?).

On one of the computers with Outlook installed fire up Regedit and go to HKCU\Software\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\Windows Messaging Subsystem\Profiles delete the Outlook profile entry and the Recreate is using the Mail applet in control panel and then open Outlook and see if it works.

Cheers

Thanks Andy! Yes, up until the original Exchange box got taken, the clients worked fine. When I installed an actual server, cleaned out all remnants of the old Exchange instance in AD, and loaded Exchange on the new box, it has not worked. I have used the Troubleshooting Assistant, but it says the box is functioning perfectly (with web based mail, it is).
I am looking at the regedit item you mentioned... but I am not seeing any folders that describe the profiles...just keys with long hex numbers???

Thanks

Hiya mate,

Under the HKCU\Software\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\Windows Messaging Subsystem\Profiles (which is located on the client not the server) you should have some folders which are entitled "MS Exchange Settings" or similar (it depends on what you have called the MAPI Profile) under here you will have folders that contains lots of HEX entries.

Can you see them?

Hi Andy!

Thanks for responding... I'm starting to look for a stout beam to throw a rope over right about now... ;-)
Yep, I see em.. about 16 entries with long hex names.
Should I whack em??

Ok, before you do, take a backup copy of them (select the parent key) the go to file Export.

Then after you have Exported them, delete the keys so it is blank under the profiles section of the Keys.

Then recreate the profiles via the mail applet in Control Panel.

Cheers

Thanks again Andy!

Backed up key. Deleted existing profiles. Recreated Profile:

"The action could not be completed. The name could not be matched to a name in the address list"

Same message as before. I have also tried a freshly imaged workstation with the same results. And a number of other client test boxes.

?

Ok, lets have a look at a couple of things,

1. Has the mailbox alias the your are trying to configure been hidden from the GAL?

2. Have you checked the e-mail addresses tab in ADUC and ensured that they have an address?

Cheers

Nope, not hidden- checked that thru numerous TIDs scoured on the web.

Hello chap, how many DC's do you have and how many GC's?

Have you rebooted the GC since the reinstall?

OWA works fine for these accounts?

Cheers

One DC which contains the CG.
It has not been rebooted in some time.
Do you know if there is a way to start and stop the CG, with booting the server?
Production stuff, ya know?
Otherwise I can schedule a reboot for later tonight.

Thanks Man!

The only reason why I suggest booting the GC is down the the NSPI role, which can cause issues like this - please see http://support.microsoft.com/kb/321318

Regreattably the only way to do this is to boot the server ,

Cheers

Andy!

Sorry, I didn't answer your other question...
Yes, the same test users I am using for the failing Outlook problems... can successfully send mail back and forth to one another using the OWA.

Thanks again for your help!

Whoo-hoo! Hello and thanks to the other side of the pond!
Thanks Andy!
Rebooting the CG server was the ticket!  After rebooting, I was successful in creating a profile and having Exchange and Outlook talk to one another.
Thanks so much again for the help!
Now that I've got that behind me, I'm going to take baby steps and move slowly.

Andy, since you are so very helpful, maybe you can shed some light on my next quest...When building my test server months ago, I remember banging my head trying to figure out about connecting our ISP for Internet mail. At that time, I was creating a test mail address and it gave me fits. What I want to do now, is shut down our Groupwise server and have Exchange handle the internet mail. Can you point me in the right direction for setting that up?? If need be, I'll create a now posting with specific questions.

Thanks again !

-Jeff
