Hi,

I need some advice from you guys/gals, im stuck on a failover problem and the only way out I can see is spending near 5k to recitify it, I am running Windows Server 2003 Std and Exchange 2003 Std on two servers geographically seperated and I want to implement DR/failover on the two. I know I cannot cluster the servers because of the 'Std' limitation so I need some help/ideas on howto go about it, so far I have come up with the following;
  • Virtualise the two servers and batch copy the virtual files over to the the backup server ready to boot up in a disaster
  • Create an different alias on the backup server and have each mailbox on the primary server forwarding a copy of the mail to the backup alias
  • Use a 3rd party piece of software e.g. SplitSite from Marathon or WANSync from XOSoft

All of the above have thier pro's and con's but if anyone else knows another route I could take please, let me know!

Thanks for reading people I look forward to you reply and thank you for your help.
Darren

Ok, a couple of questions;

How many users do you have?
How up to date does the data have to be, I assuming that because you are considering batch copy of VM files that the data does not need to be totally up to date.

Does the offsite server need to be an exact replica of the main environment?

Money appears to be an issue - is this the case,

Cheers

We have between 40-50 users and I would like the data to be as upto date as possible, that was one of the con's regarding the batch copy which is why I didn't really want to go down that route.

Money is not the main issue, if I have to spend 1/2k on 3rd party software then i'll spend it but im just looking around for the best possible solution without spending too much, if I went down the route of upgrading Std > Ent then I would have a lot of work todo rebuilding the current Exchange server and two OS's which I just haven't got time todo at the moment.

Hiya chap, do you know that the Enterprise Edition can just be installed over the top of the standard Edition?

Have a look here http://support.microsoft.com/?id=170280 and here http://www.petri.co.il/upgrading_from_exchange_server_standard_edition_to_the_enterprise_edition.htm,

However, this does not really get around the problem as you cannot convert a Basic installation of Exchange to a cluster, plus you would need to purchase addtional hardware in order to construct a cluster.

Are you just looking at a means to have your data placed elsewhere, or is the buring desire to have a hot standby which clicks in should an issue happen?

Cheers
