bigb3n -> Migrating 2003 -> 2003 New Organization Help please (25.Jul.2007 11:01:04 AM)

Hi.
I am trying to migrate from an old Windows 2000 domain with Exchange 2003 to a new Windows 2003 domain with Exchange 2003.

I have created a trust and correctly setup DNS for both domains. When I try and run the mailbox migration wizard I get an error saying " Unable to logon to the server. Please verify the server name, port, account name, and password."

Please help, I have phoned Microsoft and they can't help me either!

Thanks in advance,

Ben

Hiya Ben,

The mailbox migration wizard has always been a little "iffy", have you ensured that the account in your new domain (which you are running the mailbox migration wizard under) has "send as" and "recieve as" permissions on the old domains organisation - also you should check that the old and new Exchange server can correct resolve both the NETBIOS name and FQDN of the Exchange servers and domain controllers (this can be done using the HOSTS file as a dirty fix).

Should you have further problems have you considered using EXMERGE to export the mailbox data from Exchange 1 to Exchange 2?

Cheers

Hi, thanks for your swift replies. I am trying to migrate the mailboxes from the old Windows 2000 domain to the 2003 domain.

I have had some issues with DNS but I can now resolve the NETBIOS name and FQDN using ping and NSLOOKUP. I tried the hosts file and that didn't seem to work as well. :-( I have delgated control but not the send and recieve on the users mailbox. I will try this and post a reply. Have you got instructions on how to use Exmerge or know a website that has? as a reserve plan?

Thanks again,

Ben

yeah exmerge is a good tool for taking the mails into pst.
just you require is send as and receive as permission the guy who is running this exmerge utility.
what i use to do is
i will create a seperate account and will give this rights for taking the pst

Hiya Ben,

EXMERGE is fully scrip-table, but depending on the size of your domain you could export all the mailboxes (following the guide suggested by Ismail) to PST's and then import then in.

In regard to the Migration Wizard there is a pretty good overview here: http://www.msexchange.org/tutorials/Exchange-Migration-Wizard.html

Just remember the two main things that go wrong with the Migration Wizard are Name resolution issues and permissions - so check the "send as and receive as" rights, to make sure the permissions of the account that you are using to run the wizard have the correct permissions on both the source domain and destination domain follow the instructions in this article: http://www.petri.co.il/grant_full_mailbox_rights_on_exchange_2000_2003.htm

Alrighto, I just today faced this issue and there is no documentation from MS if you come across "Unable to logon to the source server". I would like to know if someone has gotten any resolution for this one. "Send As / Receive As" is indeed a good option and will test that in my VMware shortly. Is there any other otherwise?

My last option is to go with Exmerge & ADMT / Password Migration Server.

For me, I had to add the DNS suffix into the "DNS Suffix Search Order" section of the TCP/IP properties.

Added both domains to the DNS Suffix Search Order :
YourOriginalCo.com
YourNewCo.com
